About Michael

I’m a Metro Detroit–based guitarist and music instructor with over 15 years of teaching and performing experience. I started playing guitar at age 13 and knew early on that I wanted to teach others how to play and better understand music. Since then, I’ve taught thousands of lessons to students of all ages, skill levels, and musical interests.

For five years, I taught at Guitar Center, where I maintained a weekly roster of approximately 65 students. During that time, I had the opportunity to teach one of the company’s executive vice presidents, who later recommended me for Guitar Center’s Best in Class instructor group.

After gigging and recording with local rock bands, I began studying classical and jazz guitar with award-winning instructor Robert Gallagher. I later earned my BA with honors through the Detroit Institute of Music Education, with my degree awarded by Falmouth University. At DIME, I studied extensively with guitar department head Kris Kurzawa, as well as Joe Foster and Matt Callaway.

I’ve continued studying throughout my teaching career, including several months of private lessons with guitarist and educator Levi Clay, as well as private lessons with legendary bassist Carol Kaye and guitarist Rick Graham. I’ve also participated in workshops and events such as the 2022 Modern Guitar Summit.

I’m passionate about helping people become better at something they love doing, and I strive to make lessons comfortable, encouraging, and fun for every student.

About the lesson

Before your first lesson, I’ll ask you to put together a list of some of your favorite songs, bands, and artists, along with any songs you’d especially like to learn. I want to understand what inspired you to pick up the guitar and what you hope to accomplish so that we can build your lessons around music that genuinely interests you.

I believe you can learn the fundamentals of guitar and music theory without separating them from the music you actually want to play. I use songs as vehicles for developing technique, learning chords and scales, understanding rhythm and theory, training your ear, and discovering how music works. My goal isn’t just to show you where to put your fingers to play a song—it’s to help you understand what you’re playing so you can apply what you learn to other music and become a more independent musician.

Everyone learns differently, so I don’t use the same approach with every student. If something doesn’t make sense, we’ll find another way of looking at it until it does. I’m patient and easygoing, and I work hard to create an environment where you can ask questions, make mistakes, and learn without feeling stressed, pressured, or talked down to.

Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or you’ve been playing for years, we’ll start with your goals and develop a plan that helps you make progress while keeping lessons enjoyable and relevant to the music you love.
