About Mark

I have spent a long career teaching pupils of all ages, abilities and interests both as a secondary school music teacher and for the last 20 years in my own successful teaching practice. As such, I have much experience of adjusting my teaching style to each individual pupil. Whether it's a teenager polishing audition pieces for a music college audition, a young beginner in their first lesson or an older adult discovering they can play tunes they've always wanted to play, my satisfaction comes with the level of enjoyment and sense of fulfilment in my students. About the lesson

Lessons are 30 or 60 minutes and can be face to face, online or a mixture of the two. I have entered well over 500 pupils for exams and have an excellent track record of success (50% Distinction, 40% Merit, 10% Pass). I cover all grades from beginner to ARSM diploma and also teach jazz improvisation and theory to Grade 8 (including a special fast track Grade 5 course.)

I also enjoy teaching those who prefer to learn for relaxation and leisure and cover all styles and genres. I supplement commercially produced sheet music by using music software to produce my own arrangements of pieces chosen by my pupils. These are customised to the pupils' particular skill level and I also add backing tracks to enhance the experience.

Whether studying for exams or leisure, I like to record my pupils' best performances so they can play the recordings to friends and family. Pupils can make their own CD's and these build over the years into an excellent record of achievement.

Mark has such a fund of musical knowledge that it is always inspiring to hear more about the composers and their styles. He encourages you to develop good technique and demonstrates how to do this. He is always striving for you to produce your best performance and suggests a wide variety of pieces to play in order to achieve this.
