About Martina

Hi! I was born and raised in Italy. I moved to the UK for university, where I completed my aerospace engineering degree in Bristol. Having attended international school and lived in several countries, I am naturally very fond of foreign languages and I speak Italian (native), English, French and some Mandarin. I have recently started studying German. I always try my best to transmit the same passion to my students. In 2020 I started working as an interpreter for Italian and French. This has made my passion for languages grow even more. My first experience with teaching dates back to high school, when I tutored a student in English at intermediate level for two years. I transitioned to teaching Italian after moving to the UK. I have been teaching Italian to beginners and advanced students ever since (5+ years).

I have been teaching Italian as a part-time job for 5+ years, at first alongside full-time university studies and currently alongside my other job. I mostly give lessons to adults, but I have experience with teenagers and children as well. My lessons are usually developed in two parts: conversation and grammar activities. I always prepare materials tailored to my students' interests for the conversation-based part of the lectures. These may include games, videos with related questions and activities, articles and much more. For grammar, I tend to work with notes, worksheets and practical examples, but I can adapt to the students' needs and preferences. The majority of my students have found this method extremely effective and made good progress with me. Please see the review section for more feedback from my students. I can teach individual or group lessons up to 4 people (online too). The base rate will be increased by 40% per extra participant. I am currently unable to teach in person due to time restrictions.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Italian fluently because I was born and raised in Italy, until I moved to the UK at the age of 19.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Dante Alighieri is with no doubt the most iconic historical characters in Italian culture. His main work, La Divina Commedia, and the depiction of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven within this masterpiece has been a source of inspiration for countless modern books, poems, films, paintings and more.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

"Avere le orecchie foderate di prosciutto" is my favourite Italian saying. It means "to have your ears lined in prosciutto (ham)" and is used to criticise or ironise about people who are not listening properly. It shows how closely-related to food the language is in our country.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Italian is my most obvious link to my origins and my culture. Especially while living in a different country, language plays a crucial role in keeping my identity alive. Plus, there's not enough words to translate all the Italian ingredients in English.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty with Italian is always the grammar. But with a bit of patience and interactive exercises, it is an obstacle that everyone can overtake.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I have learnt three foreign languages in my life (English, French and Mandarin) and just getting started with my fourth one (German). Inevitably there have been some funny misunderstanding related to this. I will not forget the day when I had a go at my friend for taking half an hour to make "tea". That was also the day I found out Brits use the word "tea" to say dinner (and many more things). At that point I had been learning English for almost 16 years and I had lived in the UK for a couple months. It shows how you never - and I mean never - stop learning a language. That's the beauty of it.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

It's hard to answer this one since I lived in Italy fo 19 years. But in general, when I travelled to places that speak French, English, Mandarin or German, I was fascinated by the ease with which you can learn new words, simply reading signs, a menu or hearing the locals speak in a familiar context.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My life-long experience with learning languages, deep knowledge of grammar theory and 4 year experience in tutoring make me a Superprof. Plus, I never run out of enthusiasm for this job.
