I have a PhD in Genetics and following an academic research career, I have more recently been self-employed as a private tutor, coaching local (Aberdeen, Scotland) primary and secondary students in person on a 1 to 1 or small group (2-3 students) basis. I also tutor students online who prefer this mode of coaching or are not in the immediate vicinity. I offer focused tuition in all the science subjects (Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology). I am familiar with both the Scottish and rest of the UK national exam curriculum i.e. Scottish Qualifications - National 5/Higher/Advanced Higher and AQA/Edexcel/OCR A Levels.
I work with pre-certificate year students in a step-wise basis building solid foundations in learning understanding of key concepts. Certificate students working toward national exams in that academic year have more intense, fast-paced exam performance practice - this is carried out by building on previously assimilated knowledge and focusing on core areas and key questions through working on exam technique and methods to maximize marks obtained.
I am a reasonably hands-on tutor that motivates and micro-manages progress - essential for exceptional results! I also actively encourage students to get in touch between formal sessions to clear-up any questions they may have on subject material/homework/assignments. I usually have worksheets assigned after each session to consolidate learning.
I have been tutoring since 2008 and have taught nearly a 100 students in that time. To date, ALL of my certificate students have subsequently achieved a minimum of grade B in their national exam for that subject and more than 88% have achieved the top grade. I pride myself on this consistent achievement.
Base rate will be £35/h for certificate years
I have had Jay as my teacher in high school, and then in my pre-medical year at university. She has helped me greatly with my studies in Advanced Biology and Chemistry. When I don't understand something, she reviews and patiently goes over that topic again with me. Jay also has tons of resources and questions for me to practice with. Furthermore, she also responds back whenever I need further support and guidance. I would highly recommend her to new students wishing to improve their knowledge and understanding of Biology and Chemistry at senior school and university entry levels. She has been especially helpful in preparing me to pass my university exams.

Jay has tutored my daughter, Holly, this past year in Higher Chemistry and Physics. She is very passionate and committed to making sure Holly understands everything clearly. She sets her practice work after every session to consolidate and revise material covered. Holly has found Jay to be very knowledgeable and engaging and has since developed a deeper interest in her studies. We have also seen her performance in assessments improve steadily and equally with feedback from her school teachers regarding progress. All in all, if you are considering a tutor, Jay is a fantastic choice!
Jay has been tutoring our daughter for the past 2 years. We had been really struggling to find a good fit with Maths tutors beforehand. Nicole has since made steady progress with her tutor's guidance and dedicated approach to helping her understand content clearly. She particularly found Jay's approach to show her alternative ways to solve problems which she had previously found confusing at school. We were delighted when Nicole achieved A in her National exam. She found the tailored, 1-1 approach invaluable. Jay has been very professional and proven to be an absolute godsend for us! We have no hesitation in recommending her.
