About Joseph
I spent a decade leading a neighborhood choir before realizing my real passion was working one-on-one with singers who wanted a patient guide rather than a drill sergeant. Music was never a solitary pursuit for me growing up my grandmother sang while cooking and my siblings and I harmonized on car rides without ever calling it practice. That informal joyful start shaped how I teach today. I believe technique should serve expression rather than replace it so I spend as much time talking about phrasing and storytelling as I do about vocal mechanics. Outside lessons I still sing with a small a cappella group on weekends which keeps my own ear sharp and my teaching grounded in real performance experience. Students often tell me they arrive nervous and leave lessons feeling like singing is something they were always capable of doing they just needed someone to show them how to listen to themselves.

My lessons grow out of years spent directing a community choir where I learned that every voice has its own natural color waiting to be uncovered. I begin each new student with breath and posture work before any singing happens because the body is the instrument. From there we build warm ups tailored to the individual voice type rather than a one size fits all scale pattern. Repertoire choice matters enormously to me so I ask students what songs move them and we work backward from that excitement to build technical skill. Recording lessons on a phone lets students hear their own progress honestly. I also weave in simple ear training games so pitch accuracy becomes instinctive rather than forced. Group sing alongs happen occasionally for students who want performance practice in a low pressure setting. Above all I want singing to feel like something joyful rather than a chore to be perfected.
