About Marina

My name is Marina and I am from Barcelona. I am primarily a journalist and a filmmaker, although I have my longest experience as a teacher. I am polite, proactive, thoughtful and responsible person, who after 13 years of teaching different children from different ages have never had a bad experience. All the goals agreed, both with parents and students have been reached, some of them after a difficult and rough ride, but always with high commitment and sense of humour.

About the lesson

I consider my teaching methodology as a working mix of the strict and disciplined teacher, and the one who will allow you to go the toilet whenever you need it. My classes are always focused on what the student chooses. For example, first of all I would ask which level of Spanish the children have so I can organise my class. Once in class, I would first start asking them their favourite topic, for example, if they are 6/7 years old: favourite food. I am sure most of them would say pasta or pizza, or chips. With that in mind we would start the class adding words in Spanish, for example "patatas" means potatoes - quite similar isn't it? What about if we go for pasta or pizza? Wait! It's the same word! We could then start adding other things that children would like to eat. Finally, according to the age, we will write down our 3 main courses of the menu. They will bring that menu (for example: pizza, olives, crisps, and water to drink: pizza, olivas, patatas fritas, y agua) home and try to explain to their families what their favourite meal is! As I said, according to the level and the age, the menu would be more or less elaborate. My main idea here, is that the knowledge I offer them at class will be used at home to 'show off' in front of the family. That means, the learning will be supported at home somehow. I would do 3 quick questions the next day to ask who remember what we did yesterday.

If it's a one to one class, things get even funnier and more efficient!

The feeling of fulfilment that I have when I am teaching is something I want to keep experiencing for the rest of my life. Through teaching languages, you create a link between yourself and the student that allows you to see how the learning process is experienced and how happy the student becomes after discovering how they are able to communicate in another language.
