About Catherine

I am an experienced teacher and tutor with over 10 years’ experience working in education, specialising in Design Technology and Product Design. I have taught across a range of schools and settings and have supported students from KS3 through to GCSE and A Level.

Alongside my teaching experience, I have spent several years working in pastoral education, including leadership roles supporting students’ wellbeing, confidence and personal development. This has shaped the way I tutor: I believe students make the best progress when they feel comfortable, understood and confident enough to ask questions and make mistakes.

I have tutored GCSE and A Level students over the past two years, helping them to develop their subject knowledge, improve exam technique and prepare effectively for assessments. I also have experience teaching Art, Photography and supporting students across other subjects, including Maths, Science and English as a foreign language.

I have experience working with different exam boards and understand the importance of helping students develop both a secure understanding of the subject and the skills needed to apply their knowledge successfully in assessments.

My teaching and pastoral experience has also given me a strong understanding of the different barriers that can affect a student's progress. I am particularly passionate about helping students who have lost confidence in a subject, providing a calm and encouraging environment where they can ask questions, make mistakes and develop their skills at their own pace.

My aim is to make tutoring a positive experience: helping students not only to achieve their academic goals, but to develop the confidence and independence to succeed.

About the lesson

My lessons are friendly, supportive and tailored to each student. Before we begin, I like to understand what the student is currently working on, what they find challenging and what they would like to achieve.

Lessons can be adapted to suit individual needs. This might mean revisiting a topic that has not quite clicked, developing subject knowledge, working through coursework or NEA requirements, practising exam questions, improving exam technique or preparing for upcoming assessments.

I use clear explanations, questioning, worked examples and exam-style practice to help students understand not just what the answer is, but how to approach questions independently.

I understand that some students can find asking for help difficult, particularly if they have lost confidence in a subject. My pastoral experience means that creating a calm, encouraging environment is just as important to me as covering the content.

Whether a student needs a little extra support, is looking to improve their grades or wants to challenge themselves further, I will adapt my approach to help them make progress and feel more confident in their abilities.
