About Jessica
Acting Up was founded by Jessica Nicole Hill, a professional actor and educator based in Chicago, Illinois. Her credits include everything from background talent to leads in several independent films. She is also currently featured in many commercials and digital spots on social media. Jessica's passion in life is story-telling. She looks forward to sharing that passion with others in every way possible. Jessica is originally from Georgia where she earned a BFA in Theatre Perfomance and Education. She worked at the Springer Opera House, the state theatre of Geogia, as a leading actor, stage manager, and teaching artist before moving to Atlanta. While in Atlanta, she found a love for film while working as an extra on various sets.

First we must set our intentions for the session. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is full emotional life while performing text. Prefection takes time so an ice breaker or warmer activity is a good way to relieve a student's anxiety about "getting it right".
I'd like to get to know the student before providing any feedback. Likes, dislikes, temperment, natural rhythm, and vocal quality all provide an excellect foundation for finding the right material or tone for an audition. It's important to let the student explore while providing guidance and a safe environment in which to stretch themselves. Then the true work can begin.
Once material has been selected and reviewed, we continue our process by appliying script scoring and memorizing techniques to help the student understand and learn the text. I am a firm beliver that one cannot truly "act" and "read" at the same time so getting off book is extremely important. Once the student is off book we can really dive into the emotional life of the text. That's when things get fun and the student gains the freedom to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances.

Jessica was always so kind and gave the best redirects! She would help you find how you related to the character so you could make it your own. Some of my favorite monologues that I’ve performed were those that she worked on with me. She’s definitely one of my favorite past teachers.
