About Mari

Hello! ¡Hola! I'm Mari DeOleo and I'm passionate about building BRAVE SPACES in-person and online for PLAY, CREATIVE EXPLORATION, DYNAMIC COMMUNICATION, and JOY!

Since 2005, I have been honored to work with young creators/markers/artists and creative people of all ages to make their ideas into reality, follow the fun, build confidence and collaboration as we learn while we play. I’m thrilled that you and your learner(s) are interested in creating with me! If you're looking for BOLD, ENERGETIC, and CREATIVE classes, I will be teaching about the artist journey, creativity, empowerment, history, comedy, the performing arts, storytelling, rap, theater/event/creative production, leadership, design, visual/digital art, sculpture, tv and film production.

Storytelling, creating visual and performance art, producing creative products/productions, and teaching others have been my passions since I was a young person. My first play was at six, I was a public speaking translator starting at ten, my first visual art job was at fifteen, I sold my first painting at seventeen and I began working with young people professionally at nineteen.

Professional experience:

-Eight years in preschool and early childhood education and care

-Four years teaching enrichment classes

-Twelve years running a creative business and teaching artist practice in theater and events

These years have included:

Touring as a performer for children’s theater, improv, musical improv, sketch comedy, and musicals. Clowning and face painting for festivals/parties/amusement parks. Playwriting, devising, and directing for theater with young actors, outdoor theater/events, and comedy. Teaching artistry in art, theater, and community engagement for elementary and middle schools, after school programs, community centers, youth and comedy theaters. Producing and managing theater shows, festivals, events, and live podcast tapings. Writing and performing in comedy, musicals, and improv. Creating props, costumes, sets, visual and digital art.

My pedagogy is play-based, inclusive, Waldorf/Montessori inspired, and differentiated for learners of all abilities. I practice positive reinforcement, behavioral modeling, and teach using inquiry-based learning (I love questions!), visualization (I’m a visual learner myself!), and cooperative playing (because who doesn’t like to have fun)! I love conspiring with young creators to find their special talents/skills/personalities, work through the self-doubt and the fear we all experience, provide parents with feedback, tailor lesson plans to each unique cohort group, and help young creators on their creative journeys.

About the lesson

Acting lessons offered by Mari are tailored to each student's needs and level. Lessons can also be held online. Lessons are also available in Chicago. The first lesson is free to define learning goals and methodology.
