About Bethany

I approach the process of acting from a perspective of empathy. As a student takes on a character, they invest themselves in the character, and in many ways the development of a character enables the student to see and experience more of humanity. So, I approach with the intention to give life to the character from the experience of the actor. I strive to tailor the level of acting work to the age and experience of the student. It is important to begin the process of acting at a level that is safe and understandable by the student.

I love the process of discovering the truth of the character. And there are different levels of discovering characters. For example, a young person needs one kind of coaching that focuses on the student's ability to develop empathy, and the level of development for more mature characters requires that mature students be more adventurous, yet still residing in a safe zone.

I have loved the process of developing a character and giving her life. And I wanted to work with college age students and adult students, so I went to Graduate School to get my Ph.D.

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Texas Tech University, a Master of Arts in Drama from the University of Arkansas, and a Doctorate from the University of Kansas. I have also enhanced my education through additional training experiences, including the Dell'Arte Summer Intensive in Blue Lake, CA; the Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo, Italy, and work as an actor for the Mount Sequoyah New Playwright's Retreat in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from which I was recruited to perform in "Sister Calling My Name" by Buzz McLaughlin at the Playwright's Theatre of New Jersey.

About the lesson

A teacher only provides opportunities to learn, it is the student who does the learning. Therefore, it is important to know what the student's goals are. In a class with multiple students, sharing what each person is hoping to accomplish allows for everyone to be heard and to enable one another towards each person's goals. As the teacher, I listen carefully to what a student tells me is their purpose in being in a particular class, but I also observe the student to learn what they are able to do and what they may need more training in order to achieve their goals. Students keep a journal of their learning progress, and that gives them a sense of their progress toward their goals. Challenge and support are essential for learning, both about performing, but also about one's self.

I've worked with children, middle school kids, high schoolers, as well as college students and adults. There are so many discoveries that can be made at each stage of life.

Be prepared to be challenged. You will learn at least as much about yourself as you will about the characters you work on. Those characters are opportunities to see through other eyes and to understand other ways of being in the world, and that can lead you an appreciation of other perspectives.

My last group of college students wrote, directed and performed in an original piece of theatre. They were hesitant at first because they had always followed a script, but they discovered their own voices and their own staging modalities to create a completely authentic piece of theatre. And they discovered that they can make their own work, which is terrific!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's important that you let your teacher know if you have specific concerns or activities that you don't want to do... or can't do. Either physically or emotionally or psychologically. Because theatre and film most often is dealing with major emotional experiences. So be honest about what you can do and what you really can't do.
