Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and friends beyond the binary... we can work together to create compelling, meaningful performances, with memorable, truthful characters.

I have developed many tips, tricks, and techniques over my twenty years as a professional actor/director and I truly enjoy sharing them with actors of all ages and abilities. I am happy to be a simple sounding board, create a rigorous workshop tailored to your specific needs and skills, or anything in between.

I have trained in many techniques from classical to modern, from naturalistic to avant-garde. Each technique has informed my body and mind in their own way, and give me insight and access to a broader palate of choices when approaching new material and new contexts.

So, whether you need to plumb the murky depths of Shakespeare or prepare yourself to face the crowd at business meetings, I make sure to create an encouraging and inclusive working atmosphere where we can learn what techniques are best for each individual.

I will work hard for you and will help you develop a toolkit that you can take out of the classroom and onto stage and screen or into the boardroom!

I think that acting is a wonderful art form that has the potential to enlighten and enliven the lives of both performer and audience.

Every story told is an opportunity for empathy and revelation.

I first started teaching in 2004 while I was at Theater West Virginia where select actors are given the opportunity to teach classes around their performance schedule. It turned out I had a knack for it so I have continued to do it off and on between gigs.

More recently, with the pandemic closing theaters, I have come back to teaching/coaching, mostly over zoom.

I have a bachelors degree in Theatre from the Comunications and Performance Studies Department of Northern Michigan University. I also studied at Michigan State University for more specific and advanced techniques, including Meisner, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, classical, and acting for film and video.

I have also taken numerous private lessons all across the country while traveling as a working actor. Among my favorites was studying with Broadway actor Paul Truckey who had a fantastic run as Inspector Javert in Les Miserables.

About the lesson

I value your time and mine, so, the process depends a little on the experience level of the student. An experienced student may just want to jump into work and get some notes and tips, or may just want a scene partner for work in progress.

With less advanced students or advanced students with longer term goals, the first step is usually a discussion (which can be brief or in depth as needs be) with the purpose of establishing a comfortable rapport and setting individualized parameters and goals for the work ahead.

Next is a little "audition" wherein I provide material for some cold reads to help me assess what a proper starting place might be for achieving the agreed upon goals. (I know the word audition strikes fear in some actors, but auditions are an important part of the job. Acting often requires overcoming fears, sometimes even embracing them and making an ally of them, and there are practices and techniques for making auditions less stressful!)

If the lessons continue over several sessions then I can create a stepped program aimed at whatever goals are set. The goals and program will be flexible as needs change but generally having a shared plan saves time and money and helps focus.

I have worked with ages 5-73. I have worked with all genders, races, types, the able bodied and those with special needs.

I endeavor to meet each student where they are and help them towards where they'd like to be.

Acting is fun but not necessarily easy.

Find a coach who gets you, challenges you, and helps you meet the challenge.

Some goals take time to achieve, even for experts.

At some point you may want to change your goals and even change coaches. That's ok. Everyone is unique, everyone changes, and every coach/teacher-student relationship reflects that.

This last fall I volunteered for a friend's theater company (Edge Youth Theater in Chicago) that specializes in bringing theater to underserved populations. Due to COVID-19 they had to make an emergency shift to all zoom performances and classes and were at risk of having to shut down. I got to play an over the top bad guy and help coach the kids on acting for a camera as opposed to an audience.

Standard price for a single adult is $40/hr.

I do have other rates for special circumstances such as multiple student classes, as well as potential discounts for financial hardship or charitable organizations.
