My name is Matthew and I’m a local actor in the Monterey Bay area. I moved out here two years ago and was lucky enough to meet Justin Gordon in my first theatre class I took at Monterey Peninsula College. I have taken classes at a few different junior colleges and realized quickly that this wasn’t your average experience or teacher. The class was fast paced and focused heavily on understanding your own motivations while throwing your energy at your fellow actors (a technique that was still new to me) and I found myself starting to see a much clearer picture by the end of the semester.
I was still hungry to work with him after the class ended and was fortunate enough to be cast in the role of Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (2019). Of the seven shows I performed in last season, this one was not only the most special for me because of the uniqueness of the performance, but also because top to bottom every single person wanted to be there and put on something special. I attribute a great deal of that to Justin and his vision of professionalism, while also appreciating the actor’s perspective and desires (something really rare in our field).
I quickly signed up for my next opportunity, this time as his assistant director in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2019) and felt like I was part of an incredibly intensive, but inclusive and team built production. By the end of it, every cast and crew member had gone above and beyond their duties to come together and perform something truly different. I can’t say enough how important that is to an actor like me.
After working with him as a director, I got the opportunity to share the stage with him later in the season in the Carmel Shakespeare Festival sharing the role of Pericles with him, then playing side by side in Shakespeare in Love and I can say that his professionalism carries over regardless of his position.

He has a clear vision, a playful approach, and most importantly, he is one of the most passionate people i’ve had the pleasure of working for. Couldn’t recommend the man more.
