About Brian

I have over 42 years in theatre (including many years as an actor) and over 30 years in higher education. I retired from Kent State Stark in 2018 as an Associate Professor and Theatre Director. During my eight years there, I selected and directed 25 theatre productions, in addition to teaching classes and coordinating the Theatre Dept. Theatre and teaching have been a vital part of my life. Rather than being merely a job, this has been a calling. Seeing my students develop has been one of the most important aspects of my career.

After many years as an actor, I became interested in directing and went to UC Irvine to get my M.F.A in directing from one of the best theatre grad schools in the country. That is when I started teaching.

Brian Newberg is an Emeritus Associate Professor of Theatre and Theatre Director at Kent State University at Stark. Brian’s directing experience (over eighty production credits) includes Broadway, Regional, Equity Waiver, industry showcases, new work development, and many college productions. He has extensive experience as an actor (over seventy production credits) in the New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oregon areas. He has also served as an Associate Artistic Director for a regional theatre company, run his own private acting studios, and taught at a number of colleges on the west coast before coming to Kent State. Brian is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) and received his M.F.A. in Directing from the University of California, Irvine.

About the lesson

My acting process is about empowerment and freeing the artist. I focus on being in the moment, and properly breaking the script down to facilitate authentic acting. I utilize a variety of methods to achieve these goals, and to reduce stress and tension.

My most recent acting was in a production of "Molly Sweeney" at Weathervane Playhouse in Akron in the Fall of 2018, after I retired from Kent State Stark Theatre. More about this show is at my Facebook page. I also am quite proud of the work that my former students are doing.
