My name is Joelle, and I'm currently a junior in college with a 4.0 GPA working towards a double major in accounting and economics. I'm in Maryland for the summer, and in Tennessee during the school year for college. I have background in a wide variety of studies including math, introductory sciences, Spanish, and business courses. I was homeschooled for several years before attending my local community college for my last two years of high school to earn my associate's transfer degree. During those years, I worked as a peer tutor for around twenty hours a week and loved every second of it. While tutoring, I earned a level 1 CRLA tutoring certification through my employer. I have a penchant for teaching, and the challenges that it brings my way. I'd like to return to academia after working in the field for a few years to earn a graduate degree and work in postsecondary education.

I have experience tutoring college level courses and an appreciation for the benefits of homeschooling. As such, I am open to both tutoring college level courses and assisting homeschoolers with their classes.

I've always loved teaching, and I'm open to working around my course schedule during my college semesters to assist with a class or two on a regular basis in an online schooling environment.

I tutored for two years as a peer tutor for Anne Arundel Community College, and received a level one CRLA tutoring certification. I have an associates degree with a focus in business as well as significant coursework in maths including Calculus I & II, differential equations, statistics and linear algebra, Spanish through intermediate conversational, and basic sciences including Chemistry and Physics.

About the lesson

First and foremost, it's important to understand the student's situation and goals. Are they struggling through a difficult class that is central to their college major? Are they just trying to get ahead of the game? What kind of grade are they shooting for? Is there anything in particular that they're struggling with, such as test prep, math concepts, organization or note taking?

Once I know where the student stands and what their goals are, we look at the course, it's layout, and what material it covers. If the course has already started, what material has been covered so far? What are we covering now, and is there a test or large assignment due soon?

Then we jump into the work. If the student doesn't have anything specific prepared to work on for a session, then we start with either what was covered most recently in class, or the material for the next exam or quiz. Often, one course will cause most students many of the same problems. It just so happens that those common problems are often concepts that provide the foundation for the entire course. In financial accounting, credits and debits can be confusing to get the hang of. In Chemistry I, unit conversions take some time for many people to get used to. Often times, it's an issue of learning to think about things in the right terms or in a more helpful structure, so with these issues, it's best to start building that structure from the ground up right away.

I start out showing a problem to a student, talking them through the process. Then we do a similar problem together, and once they seem to get it, I'll have them do one alone. Then we start branching out and getting more indepth from there. After we've spent some time on a concept and the session is over, we'll recap what we did, and I'll give them something to work on before the next session.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what they are looking to get out of the course, as well as what they aim to achieve by seeking outside aid. If you are having specific problems with the course, such as a particular concept or study skill, then make your tutor or teacher aware of this. Be sure to bring class materials to your first meeting.

My fee is $18 per hour for tutoring in financial accounting, chemistry I, and math up through algebra I as these are what I am most experienced in tutoring. This is also my fee for homeschool tutoring, as this involves adhering to a curriculum.

standard tutoring in other courses as well as assistance with writing is $14 per hour.
