Hi - I’m Dan, a recent graduate in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University with an A* in A Level Economics (including 100 UMS in A2 macro).

Since 2014 I have been a private tutor, a classroom assistant in two schools and a foreign language teacher in China. I have over 290 lessons and a 5-star profile on MyTutor ((concealed information)

Having taught a variety of students in different situations has equipped me to teach across ages and abilities and to be able to teach in the way that is most appropriate for the individual student – which is often different from the way they are taught at school.

I teach the combination of analysis and argument that makes for successful writing in the social sciences, which is vital for politics, economics and philosophy. However, tutoring goes beyond simply teaching the course content and how to pass an exam; I also encourage the writing of engaging and interesting pieces that not only score well in school exams, but sets students up well for further study and build their ability to write effectively in real-world situations.

About the lesson

My tutoring sessions aim to delve deeper into the content than a school lesson. Rather than simply giving a superficial understanding that only allows students to answer familiar questions, I teach thorough understanding. This gives students the ability to interpret a question and the confidence to write an outstanding answer, as this requires moving beyond what is obviously relevant.

I can work around your needs - we can follow your school's economics syllabus with regular sessions to supplement and reinforce classroom learning, or do less frequent troubleshooting lessons focussed on particular topics or subtopics. I am also available to do condensed courses covering several topics over a week or weekend (we can discuss availability if this is of interest).

A typical session would begin by setting a session objective. This is a short discussion to determine what we are aiming to achieve in the session. If there are regular sessions, there will be an overall objective and each session will be part of a schedule. This gives the student a sense of progress and targets learning effectively.

The core of the session generally revolves around looking at relevant questions and addressing issues the student has. This involves familiarising the student with relevant definitions so that they are comfortable with the concepts, working through some short answer questions, and then going to on make a plan or draft an answer for a possible essay question on the topic.
