About Gina
Camino Classical Ballet was founded by former professional ballet dancer Gina Domenichelli-Illingworth. Classes focus on providing professional classical ballet instruction to children 4yrs and up.
Gina Domenichelli-Illingworth trained at the San Francisco Ballet School and the San Francisco Conservatory of Ballet directed by Merriem Lanova, Antonio Mendes, and Carlos Carvajal. Her career began with the Oakland Ballet Company under the direction of Ron Guidi. She was a principal dancer with the National Ballet of Norway dancing roles such as, Kitri in Nureyev’s Don Quixote, Lise in Heinz Sporeli’s La Fille mal Gardée, the Sylph in La Slyphide, Brian McDonald’s Firebird, and also principal roles in choreography by George Balanchine, Jiri Kylian, Alvin Ailey, and Glen Tetley.
Ms. Domenichelli-Illingworth was also a principal dancer with the Cleveland San Jose Ballet and Eugene Ballet companies. She was one of the founding members of the Diablo Ballet in Walnut Creek, choreographing and dancing with the company during their initial seasons. She also danced with the Lawrence Pech Dance Company in its formative years.
Ms. Domenichelli-Illingworth directed the Lake Erie Ballet in Erie, PA producing original choreography for The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel, and has taught dance at the Berkeley Ballet, Contra Costa Ballet, Ballet Tucson, Motion 41 Dance (Omaha, NE), Brigham Young University, Mercyhurst University, Northern California Dance Conservatory, Dancer's Workshop(WY),and the Sacramento Ballet School.
She created the Mercyhurst North East Dance Institute in 2006, a professional dance training program for aspiring young dancers in the community. In addition to this extensive experience, she also holds a B.A in Dance and an M.S. in Organizational Leadership.
I started teaching at the Berkeley Ballet in 1993 while I was a dancer with the Diablo Ballet in Walnut Creek, Ca.
I highly recommend Gina for any position she feels suits her incredible and expansive talents. All said, you could not do better than to hire Ms. Domenichelli-Illingworth as an incredible performing artist, choreographer, devoted teacher and administrator. She has it all.

Teaching philosophy
Having taught dance at numerous ballet schools, and in the college/academic milieu, my interests lie in dance origins/history and cultural traditions; as well as the importance of incorporating the arts into educational curricula. I believe dance and all arts introduced at an early age promotes a well-rounded holistic education.
As a ballet instructor I like to impart the knowledge of dance history to my students. When they learn about ballet’s origins, historic time line, and the different schools of ballet technique, they have a better understanding of where ballet came from and how it has endured throughout the ages.
I do not teach one specific style, although I have trained in many of them. I believe each school of ballet technique offers unique and valuable material that can be applied into a functional system for learning. Functional execution of steps provides technical consistency and a better understanding of the mechanics of ballet.
I believe the ballet class should stress coordination and strength. I introduce the use of port de bras and epaulement at the barre, and slow exercises that gradually build up to faster, syncopated footwork. To summarize, I try and incorporate the ease and plasticity of French ballet training along with the coordination of the entire body and epaulement emphasized in Vaganova technique. Having worked in Scandinavia I also incorporate Bournonville-style petit and grand allegros in the center. I stress proper body alignment, but also the naturally occurring rotation of the hip joints.
Lastly, I believe dancers need to understand music and work melodiously with music when they dance. I try and construct combinations that require an understanding of musicality and syncopated rhythms. I also enjoy coaching students on artistry and artistic refinement as it is an essential aspect of a dancer’s education.
