About Matt

Matt MacKenzie is currently an Assistant Coach of Women's Basketball at Husson University in addition to teaching Physical Education full-time for the Bangor School District.

Matt is well known in the area for his work as a personal trainer. He currently works with 20-25 students individually on a weekly basis. Matt earned his certification from NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) as a Performance Enhancement Specialist in 2012. Coach MacKenzie has also worked on staff at several reputable basketball camps across New England before teaming up with Coach Mark Baxter to co-found RESULTS Basketball School in 2011.

Prior to coaching, MacKenzie played for four years at Husson University, serving as a captain for Eagles. His team earned Husson's first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2009. That same year, MacKenzie was named the North Atlantic Conference Tournament MVP, 1st Team NAC, and All-State by the Collegiate Coaches & Writers Association. Statistically, Matt MacKenzie ranks among the all time leaders in points scored at Husson University with 1,300 and career field goal percentage at 56%.

As a private skills trainer, I enjoy breaking down a player's individual skills and giving feedback and tools to improve them to a level that allows the player the chance to see success! I take pride in my ability to teach, and love when I am able to be a part of an athlete's forward progress as a basketball player!

I got started teaching private basketball lessons during my first year as a physical education teacher. Working in public schools, I noticed the demand for more individual attention to skill development, and that many local athletes were far too often picking up bad habits from just playing game after game. In order to improve as a player, skills must be taught and broken down so the player can practice properly. Individual skills training helps players target specific areas of need and give practice sessions a better purpose!

About the lesson

I typically meet with all athletes for an initial session to introduce myself and the work that I do. At this initial session, I lead the player through a variety of drills to give me (as the trainer) an opportunity to see where a player needs the most improvement, and what his or her habits might be. From there, I develop a training plan for the client to maximize his/her growth over the next series of traning sesssions!

I have worked with students of all abilities on their individual skills, ranging from 3rd/4th graders who are just learning the more advanced skills of the game, high school athletes hoping to take their game to the next level, all the way up to collegiate athletes working hard to adjust to the speed and physicality of that level of play.

I would really pay close attention to the philosphy of your trainer, and the background that they offer. There are many people out there that claim to be "trainers", though they have a very limited playing/coaching background and they lack TEACHING experience.
