About Carin
I am the principal bassoonist with the Oregon Symphony. Teaching bassoon is my passion and my students have succeeded in getting accepted to major conservatories like Curtis, Juilliard, Oberlin, Eastman, and Rice University. I have been a coach for the National Youth Orchestra for several years and am on the board of the Portland Youth Philharmonic. At the start of the pandemic, I created an online camp to lift students from all walks of life called Bassoons Without Borders. Bassoons Without Borders brings together traditions from around the world and offers a range of special topics classes to cover all angles of performance.
Performing is an electric experience, it challenges all parts of your brain and body and allows you to express yourself and connect with others. Sharing my passion with students, and helping them clear the obstacles of the instrument towards finding a clear voice, is incredibly satisfying. I love the connection built through a mentoring relationship and giving people access to their own potential.
I play principal bassoon with the Oregon Symphony, and formerly was principal bassoon with the Jacksonville and Shreveport Symphony Orchestras. I frequently perform as guest principal bassoon with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and am a regular performer with Chamber Music Northwest and Third Angle New Music. My degrees are from Juilliard and Rice University, and my teachers include Frank Morelli, Stephen Maxym, Whitney Crockett, and Ben Kamins.

About the lesson

After chatting a bit to introduce ourselves, we will start with a slow chromatic scale to check fingerings and expand the range on the instrument. I will hear a short solo or etude and work with you so you can get a sense of my teaching style. Once we know each other a little bit we will work together to choose a practice assignment and determine our goals moving forward.
