About Bob

We have been teaching all levels of students from total novices to advanced players for over 25 years. For students with problems in their mechanics we offer video stroke analysis. We provide customized drills and training programs.

We also offer instructor training to achieve PBIA (Professional Billiard Instructors Association) certification.

Lessons are tailored to individual, group and event settings and are given at public rooms or at the student or group's location.

I began teaching formal classes in 1979 at the UC Berkeley Student Union when I was a graduate student. I got involved with the PBIA as it was being formed in the early 1990s.

I have been PBIA-certified since 1993 and am currently an Advanced Instructor. I have written columns for Billiard Digest also since 1993 and have written columns for several other publications. Working with Dr. Dave Alciatore ((concealed information) , we have created several sets of DVDs covering various aspects of billiards.

About the lesson

The student is asked what their goals are for the instruction. An initial evaluation of playing ability and soundness of mechanics is done to see where we are starting. For beginners we will work from outlines in a handout so the student can easily review what we covered.

Advanced students generally have specific items to work on but we will also check their fundamentals.

Most of my students are beginners, from those who need an explanation of what chalk is for to those who have played socially for years but never really learned any standard techniques such as systematic aiming or positioning the cue ball.

Other students range from strong league players up to professional-level players.

Begin with a local instructor who can give you an hour or so at a time. Most of your improvement will come from spending focused time on the table. The instructor will be there to get you started in the right direction and help with bumps along the way.

A recent very memorable pool tournament that I enjoyed as a spectator was the US Open 9-Ball Championships in Las Vegas in April, 2019. Both the production and the competition were excellent.

Details

Standard fee for one hour: $50 possibly plus expenses

For two or more hours in one lesson: $40/hour

Lessons for groups are $60 to $100/hour depending on the details.

Generally travel is an additional cost and that is arranged case by case.
