About Melissa
As a recent graduate with a masters in Biomedical Science from University of California Irvine I am excited to pass my love for biology on to college and high school students. I have taken classes and earned cerfiticates in scientific comminucation with an emphasis in explaining cutting edge science to the average American.
I have worked as a teaching assistant for 5 semesters teaching physiology and cell biology to upper division college students at Brigham Young University and mentored many undergraduates while doing my masters work at University of California Irvine.

Biology is the user manual to our bodies and our world, and I hope to help my students gain an appreciation for the life sciences.
During my years of graduate study, I discovered that I most enjoy mentoring students one-on-one. I love it when a student's face lights up with understanding after working through a difficult concept.
While at Brigham Young University, I began working as a teaching assistant just for work. I had no interest in teaching at the time. But I quickly realized that the time I spend TAing was the best part of my work day.
While pursuing my masters at University of California Irvine, I was not given the opportunity to teach in a formal setting. I soon realized I missed interacting with students and began to look into career options in teaching.
Before I arrived in the lab at UCI, the undergraduates were only given menial tasks. By the time I left, I had created a culture of mentorship in which undergraduate students were now contributing to research projects. Working directly under a graduate mentor, undergrads learned practical lab skills which they have applied to further their careers after graduation. The experience left me with a passion for helping others grow.
I have years of graduate study in biology under my belt. However, the time I spent completing my certificates in Effective Communication for Scientists (through UCI's GPS-Biomed program) and How to Clearly Communicate Your Science to Any Audience (from Bayer Strategic Consulting) make me uniquely qualified to explain difficult scientific concepts to students with any level of interest in biology or careers in life science.

My first step is always to learn what the student already understands. Nobody appreciates being talked down to or having someone waste their time by explaining what they already know.
The next step is to figure out what type of learner the student is. Some students can learn by sitting and listening to someone talk, but most (myself included) require something more interactive. Diagrams, pictures, videos, and hands-on demonstrations are worth a thousand words and can help the student become more invested in learning the material. I strive to make difficult subjects easier to comprehend.
I have worked mostly with college students persuing degrees in biology. However, I am accepting students of all ages and can teach at any grade level.
