About Katie

Hi! I'm Katie, an aspiring ornithologist, currently wildlife biologist. I love science! I studied wildlife ecology and conservation at the University of Delaware where I learned a LOT about animals, plants, and ecosystems.

Over the last few years I have worked on several wildlife biology research projects, and I have written environmental education curriculums and taught science-based programs to all ages!

I like to make learning fun, and teach in a way that works for how you learn. This could mean practicing flashcards, drawing pictures to visualize concepts, singing silly songs to remember vocabulary - I like to get creative when it comes to homework. I think everyone learns best when they are having fun.

During our first session we will go over your concerns with your material, your learning styles, and your goals. We will build our learning plan to suit your needs!

I am located in the greater Newark area and am willing to travel to you, or meet you in a public library in Newark or Bear.

I love watching people understand and enjoy the wonders of our biological world. My first exposure to this love was through high school biology, where I had an incredible teacher. I think everyone benefits from a connection to biology, and I can't wait to share that with students via tutoring!

Teaching is a natural extension from studying wildlife, as wildlife biologists are always trying to get the public to connect with natural resources as much as possible. Plus, it's fun!

I have an honors Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Delaware. This program focuses heavily on biology and environmental sciences.

I have also been teaching nature programs at Ashland Nature Center since 2017, and I served with AmeriCorps from 2018-2019 in Reno, Nevada as the education programs coordinator for the Wilbur D. May Arboretum & Botanical Garden. In this position I developed and taught science-based curriculum for all ages (pre-school to senior citizen!), with a focus on local plants and ecosystem education.

I also have specialized experience running informal workshops about bird identification, and formal guided bird walk experience.

About the lesson

During our first session we will identify student concerns, goals, and learning styles and create a learning plan to help them achieve their goals. If we haven't already set up a meeting schedule we will also do so during the first session.

Following sessions will be focused study, followed by a brief evaluation to track learning progress and plan for the next session. Study activities may vary depending on the learning style of the student, and may include flash cards, drawing, reading/writing, acting out concepts, and more.

I do like to focus on test taking skills as well, as that is often a barrier to students regardless of subject.

I have worked mostly with children ages 5 to 12, but I have experience working with all ages. Most recently I taught a group of mixed age home schoolers for a nature journaling program.

If you need help with science, you want to find someone who is passionate and knowledgeable! Many undergraduate students or recent grads are looking for teaching opportunities and have flexible schedules ot fit your needs.

I took a trip to Cape May, NJ last week and saw hundreds of migrating warblers and hawks! The weather was so warm and sunny, and I was so lucky to enjoy the nature around me.
