About Carl

I like working with students one-on-one or in small groups. An internationally recognized writer and editor, I have published several college chemistry textbooks and a NSF-funded high school chemistry curriculum. I taught chemistry courses (organic, gen chem, and liberal arts chem) for 20 years and have tutored students for even longer. I have a PhD in organic chemistry and I am the Senior Science Writer for the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of SC in Charleston, SC. I spend my time between Charleston and the Upstate SC.

I have always enjoyed helping students learn chemistry - especially in a one-on-one setting. I have specific expertise in working with students with disabilities. I have served on the American Chemical Society's national committee on Chemists with Disabilities and we recently revised the widely distributed book, Teaching Chemistry to Students with Disabilities. I am available to tutor in-person in Charleston, SC and Seneca/Clemson, SC as well as online using Teams or Zoom.

I stood in for professors when they had to travel during my postdoctoral fellowship, and I taught night courses at Chaminade University at that time also. Then I taught at the Northern VA Community College system. In 1997 I became an assistant professor at Transylvania University; was awarded tenure early, and became the Chemistry Program Director in 2002. I held the institution's top two teaching and service awards simultaneously. I love to teach, especially in one-on-one settings. I have designed and taught online chem courses for the American Chemical Society for more than 10 years.

BS, Chemistry 1988; PhD, organic chemistry 1993, NSF-postdoc at the University of Hawaii (1993-1995). I have taught college chemistry courses for more than 20 years (Transylvania University, Monroe Moosnick Professor of Chemistry; visiting professor at Chaminade University (Honolulu), University of Hawaii (Honolulu), University of Kentucky (Lexington), York University (York, England), and was a lecturer at Clemson University. I served on the American Chemical Society (ACS) national Exam Committee, and currently serve on their Committee on Chemists with Disabilities. I co-authored two editions of the ACS textbook, Chemistry in Context. I was a writing team leader for the NSF-funded high school textbook, Active Chemistry. I am a past editor of the ACS magazine, ChemMatters. I am a regional representative for the American Association of Chemistry Teachers. I have tutored 100s of students across the country and abroad.

I am an award-winning technical writer and editor and professor.

Before any session, I obtain information regarding where the student is in terms of the sylabus, how well they think they are doing in the class, problem areas, etc. Then, I like to take some time to get aquainted so everyone is at ease.

Once I have determined the student's needs, we work together to develop a strategy to help them reach their goals.

I have various techniques for helping explain topics in several different methods. Often a picture or drawing helps a lot. I have expertise in working with students with disabilities.

A diverse and inclusive group. From high achievers at Transylvania to non-traditional (older, part-time students wanting to change careers, etc.) at the community college to minority and Hawaiian students in Honolulu (where I also tutored high school students). I have worked with high school-aged students in Kentucky and Hawaii. I am well-trained and experienced in teaching chemistry to students with disabilities and have published a book (Accessibility in the Laboratory, Oxford University Press, 2018), and I'm on the team revising the American Chemical Society's book, Teaching Chemistry to Students with Disabilities.

Hire someone who has experience and a passion for teaching. Work hard and you will get the results you want

I worked for a year with a young student with special abilities. We connected on a level apart from his Chem needs.I loved helping him.

Recently co-authored a journal article titled, "An Overview of the Preclinical Discovery and Development of Trastuzumab Deruxtecan: A Novel Gastric Cancer Therapeutic", in Expert Opinion on Drug Discovery, 2022, 17(5), 427-436. (concealed information)

Publication of "Accessibility in the Laboratory" (Oxford University Press, 2018); I served as co-editor and final chapter author for the book.

In 2016, I won 2nd place in an art competition that was part of a fund raising event for the Foothills YMCA.

In 2013, I won a literary award from a magazine called "The First Line"

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Record a list of reasons why you want to succeed in this course.

2. If you know what type of learner you are, you might pass that along to your teacher.

3. If you have a disability, connect with the school's Office of Disability services and they will give you good advice.

4. Approach your teacher with a sort of pizzazz. Do not be confrontational.

5. Make time to stop by during office hours to let the teacher get to know you.

Details

My typical fee ranges from $45-$75/hour, depending on several factors. Sometimes I will adjust my fee based on a student's ability to pay. I have often held group tutoring sessions where one fee is paid for the semester, and a group of about 10 students (no more than 10) would meet for 1.5-2 hours per week all semester. This reduced the cost to about $10/session.
