About Matthew

I teach students of all ages general computer usage, especially programming in C#, Python, and Lua.

I have been programming for 5 years, have learned at least 7 distinct programming languages, and have served professionally as a programming instructor for 1 year.

Before that I served 11 1/2 years in the military as technical support where I learned top-notch troubleshooting methods which have helped me immensely as both a teacher and a programmer.

I look forward to lending my expertise to the aid of any student in need if assistance.

I started out teaching in the military, where I taught basic tasks to fellow soldiers. From there I left active military and started teaching my brothers and classmates, and eventually sought out employment as an actual programming instructor with theCoderSchool.

I have 5 years experience as a programmer, an Associate's degree with honors in Computer Science, and have learned at least 7 different programming languages. I served as a private programming instructor for 1 year, and a professional troubleshooter with the military for 11 1/2 years.

About the lesson

When I start with a new student, I ask them what it is they're looking to learn from me. Once we get a general answer, we start to work towards more usable steps to get the student to their goal.

If it's academically based, we look at the curriculum the student needs to master and start doing a similar process, only using the curriculum as part of the baseline for what the student needs to learn.

Look for someone who knows multiple programming languages, both self-taught and institutionally taught. Each method of learning has its own benefits and drawbacks, and it's important to experience both in order to learn what blind spots you may encounter when making a program. Multiple languages is important so the instructor, even if they're only teaching you one language, knows the patterns of different kinds of programming languages and can apply that knowledge when helping you work on problems they may not have seen themselves.

Have I tried multiple solutions, or only one solution multiple times?

Never be afraid to ask the question, no matter what you think you should or should not have learned by then. It's more important to ask than hold on to pride or fear shame.
