About Lisa

Lisa Saunders is the founding executive director of Ethnic Arts Institute International and it's resident performing arts ensemble, Hula Manu O'o. Lisa is a passionate, cultural arts advocate and a veteran of the San Francisco Bay Area ethnic dance community. By age 17, she had already established herself as an accomplished performer of classical and fusion dance. Her dance education includes immersion studies/apprenticeship with George Naope (celebrated hula master and leading advocate and preservationist of native Hawaiian culture ), Jose Lorenzo (Viva Bahia & Ballet Folclorico do Brasil), and C.K. Ladzekpo, PhD (critically acclaimed African musicologist and director of SF Ethnic Dance Festival). From 1973-79, Lisa served as a founding member and principle performer with two groundbreaking traditional dance companies. In this capacity, Lisa developed an inimitable style and mastery of energetic repertoire: expressing an authentic voice of traditional and multicultural dance.

About the lesson

Beginning students find this a fun and engaging study that combines folklore & history with traditional music & dance.

Introductory level instruction centers around the how-to's of 5 basic movements and authentic gestures: all in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Then, learners' skills are further develop as their newly-formed techniques are applied to classical Hula choreography. As with all other forms of artistic study, Keiki Hula is a dynamic and rewarding discipline that builds confidence, encourages self-expression and offers the option to participate in performance events.

I have extensive training and more than 30 years of experience teaching pre-K through 12th grade children, post-secondary students, adults learners (beginning, emerging and professional levels), students with learning differences or recovering from trauma.

Successful students of Hawaiian dance refrain from applying techniques from other previous dance training or experience. During early Hawaiian dance training, hula students' learning accelerates when they think of themselves as blank slates.

In 2018, Hula Manu O'o presented for the first time ever, traditional Hawaiian Dance at Carnegie Hall.

Students should think about why they want to study Hula. Ask yourself:

(1) what is my idea/vision of Hawaiian dance?

(2) how does that differs from what I'll be taught?

(3) what will I do with/how will I use what I learn?
