About Juliana
Hello everyone, While we are homeschooling/remotely/digitally educating our kids, I would like to offer my services as a remote tutor. If students need assistance with homework, essay writing, reading and writing comprehension, art portfolio reviews, as well as any other organization skills during this time, please reach out and we can discuss any way I can be of help. I have been teaching and tutoring for five years in both public and private institutions. I am passionate about fostering creative ways of thinking and making, and I have taught in the the public school system, which gives me a foundational understanding of curriculum standards and goals (see below for details and qualifications). As a tutor, I work with students to develop approaches that ensure they are learning and progressing, in a way that makes sense for them individually, while also having fun and enjoying their work. Some skills we will build are time management, goal setting, organization and prioritizing, and finding fun and rewarding ways to learn.
I have taught: grades 5-12 Visual Art and English as a Second Language. I have also worked as a reading and writing academic tutor at the university level. Additionally I have run leadership programs for teens, facilitated team building classes, and taught outdoor education (See list).
2019: Academic tutor, San Francisco Art Institute, CA.
2018: ESL Instructor and teacher assistant, IES El Escorial (High School), Madrid, Spain.
2017: Teaching Assistant (Art History and Figure Drawing), Maryland Institute College of Art, MD.
2016: Science Instructor and Outdoor Educator, Pali Institute, CA.
2014-2015: Art Teacher and Substitute Teacher, South Community High School, MA.
2015-2019: Teen Leadership Program Instructor, Art Teacher, Councelor, Kingsley Pines Camp, Raymond, ME.
I'm certified in: 5-12 Visual Arts and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) for all ages. I was awarded a full scholarship for my Masters degree in Teaching, obtained in 2015 from Clark University in Worcester, MA.
Other degrees include:
Cranbrook Academy of Art, MFA Sculpture, (current, to be obtained 2021).
MICA, Post-Baccalaureate in Fine Art (2017).
Clark University, BA in Studio Art, (2013)

My typical process for working with a new student starts with getting to know them and setting goals for their work/homework/specific needs. While students need different levels of guidance, organization and making a schedule can be key starters to accomplishing goals. Each session we can make a goal for that time, and we can make long term goals as well. Once we have goals and a schedule, and I know a little bit about the student, we will start working on their specific needs. I will not be doing the work for students, instead guiding them to find solutions or work flows that work for them. My approach involves a lot of question asking and listening. I also offer different methods of learning. For example, there are many ways to write an essay. If a student is struggling with one way, I will recommend another, or a few more, to see what works best for that student. The student will then learn the method by which is best for them to write a strong essay. I also use visual aid or audio interpretations, to incorporate different learning methods. I try to locate if certain issues continue to arise during a student's workflow, in which case we will spend more time with that particular material. Throughout the process, I try to find ways that the material can be relevant to the student. For example, if a student loves a particular video game, that may be an entry point to some challenging homework. I value making learning fun and embracing challenges!

Peppa is a gifted and empathetic instructor. She is extremely intelligent with a playfulness and intuition that transformed an ordinary learning experience into an extraordinary one. I think anyone who needs a bridge to understanding academics, art, and the ways of the world would grow exponentially in her care.
Juliana is an amazing tutor, and my daughter absolutely loved her. She is very patient but also so captivating and you cannot help but want to engage with her. My daughter knew some English because I had taught her some and she had learned some in school but since we were moving to America, I wanted her to have more practice. Juliana helped my daughter improve in English but also in confidence! I cannot recommend her enough!
Pepper was the best tutor I could ask for. When applying to graduate school she helped me edit and organize my school essays. She was patient and extremely knowledgeable when guiding me through essay structures. During our sessions she would help me with sentences structure, theme building, and constructing a thesis. She was very personable and receptive to what was needed to make our session as productive as possible.
