About Dottie

I love seeing the on faces of emerging artists, as they progress with me & when they see their accomplishments! I am in the “thick of it”as they say. I am in many local “pop up”art shows. I can give you tips about how to do this. I have several on-line collections under major stores with my designer art. I’ve been in the prestigious Placer Artists Studios Tour 2016 -2019. I’m a designer, taking my art and making clothes, home decor and other useful things.

Anytime you may bring along a paying friend with you for lessons, if they join, you get $25 off.

I’ve been told my enthusiasm and excitement is what brings people to me, and my ability to bring out the artist is what makes people want to paint with me. I’m passionate about art, painting, teaching and helping others. Art is my passion and my job. I’m compelled to paint & create. Let me help you on your journey.

Dottie Phelps Visker

I love painting and it comes natural for me to teach. I volunteer er at the local long term care facility on going to Give art painting lessons as an “art journey”. If I am out & about I paint wherever I am, coffee shops etc and usually get strangers to join in and become new friends. My own family and friends have found me groups to teach. I love groups of people, painting and art. If I’m on vacation, I’m painting in the breakfast room or in the area under the stars, with “new friends”.

Art has a healing quality, which is very much needed. I have had many classes in watercolor and acrylic painting throughout my life. I studied 21 years under Fine art artist, Dorothy Ruth Phelps. She studied under her favorite TV artist, Bob Ross. I recently did figure drawing class at Blue Line Arts in Roseville, California. I have watched and learned, while in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, artist Cathleen Pearce Engelseen, Watercolor Fine Artist. I have painted with accomplished artists in Placer Art League watercolor groups including sketchcrawl meetups.

Cost advice: You may even double your art time and come every other week, as some clients prefer. It’s nice to keep working once you are in the groove!

Generally I charge $30/$40/$60 for 30/45/60 minutes. For siblings I adjust down. If you gather agroup of 3+ friends/siblings the 4th is free.

Art supplies are not included. 1st complimentary 30 minutes is evaluation. Bring sketches or art to show if have any. I will provide art supplies for first “hour”. Then I can assist you to know what to purchase & what you need.

Every student needs their own art supplies and I give a complimentary genuine “designer DPVisker” totebag to carry your art supplies in to and from class, after joining as a student artist.

I have students from 5 to 103 years old I teach. Feel free to call me, it’s easier to talk (concealed information)

If they want to send me photos of a few sketches or paintings that really helps me gauge where they are and what they like. I ask if they want to bring in their work or such to show.  We walk around my studio and see what they like to proceed with.  We discuss products needed.  We use my products to do alittle introduction painting or sketching.  Or theirs if they brought some.  If jewelry making, we discuss what they are looking to do, what they have done so far.

Age isn’t a factor for me. Age 3-103. 103 is my oldest artist so far and she’s quite good. I have done art painting lessons with autism children and it’s been fine. I can work with older seniors with disabilities easily because of my nursing background. I don’t think I have any limitations, I just think if it’s a group, you have to consider that and plan accordingly.

Check to see if you are compatible. Visit their social media sites and websites. Visit their art shows in the area, if none-ask why none. Visit their art in galleries or shows, if none-be concerned.

Ask what memberships in the Arts  they they belong to and google and see if they are a current member. If not, then they might be out of touch of current art.

Try not to be be quick to judge however, look at everything. Ask around, and be sure this is the person you want to learn from. Educational background? Art degree is great, but not an absolute. However, maybe you want that. Do you want a quiet teacher or a witty one, or maybe a real punk or hard rock type. Pick one that matches what you want. Just  go to their studio and you will know!

Recently I did a art journey class in a long term facility with short term rehabilitation, we were painting a mother and a calf. The photo was mine from an Arkansas Ranch, called the Pitchford calf. We had about 14 clients there and while painting we enjoyed talking about who had lived on a farm or ranch. “Did anyone ever milk a cow?” Was one of the questions.

We stop periodically and look to the left and notice the artist’s art and make a kind comment. We are a group of “artists” and have a friendship now. “Country painting” Dottie & Dottie because my Mom & I do this together. She is a resident at this place.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Investigate as I said above and that will eliminate many teachers. Take the lead and find your best art journey person.

1. What if I get sick last minute?

2. Unexpected trip?

3. I really don’t like what you are wanting me to paint today!?

4. Adjustment for lessons cost for special situations?

5. Medium types available to teach?

6. Can a friend join the lesson for a fee?

7. Can you get me art supplies?
