About Joanne

Joanne Gigliotti has been involved in the artistic process throughout her life, seeing things in her own unique way, celebrating life's beauty in the joy of ordinary things. The largest body of her work has been created in the medium of Batik Painting. Batik is a process of coloring patters into cloth, using hot wax and cold dyes. Using this resist method, she first batiked on cloth, transitioned to rag board, and began batiking on ceramic tile, creating large scale murals.

She is currently creating batik designs for fabric, fashion, and jewelry. She continues to exhibit her work in the form of batik paintings and batik on tile. In conjunction with her exhibitions she includes an educational component and offers slide lectures, classes, and demonstrations of batik in process.

Jonas Boughter interviews his Grandmother, Artist, Joanne Gigliotti

Formerly the director of The Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts Department, Ms. Gigliotti holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, design, and sculpture from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Education in Art from The Pennsylvania State University. She has shown her work in over seventy juried and one-woman exhibitions across the United States. She was awarded 1st place in the first American Batik Design Competition held by The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, and her winning batik was exhibited extensively in Indonesia and the United States. Ms. Gigliotti is represented in permanent collections including The National Museum for Women in the Arts, The McCormick Collection, The Westinghouse Collection, and in many university and private collections. Recently, she received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and she is also included in Who's Who in American Art as an artist and art administrator.

About the lesson

First we have a discussion with the student about interests, skills, and goals, as well as gaining input from all concerned supporters (Parents, etc). Next I need some time with the student in seeing curruent work to make to plan for some short term lessons to where we need to begin. Then it's hands on and begin from there.

If Student is working on entrance portfolio we can start with the current art review, researhing the target schools and resources.
