About Dessa

I am an artist who has been an elementary art teacher for over 10 years. Sassafrass Art Studio is the place where I can work with small groups of students or one on one to help them hone their artistic abilities and learn new techniques. I'm particularly passionate about sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking, but work with and enjoy all variety of media. Whether you have a homeschool student in need of art to meet standards, a budding artist who wants to hone their abilities, a crafty kiddo desiring to create, or an advanced student passionate about sculpture and 3D forms; I can help them grow as an artist!

I have hosted summer art camps at the studio for small groups of kids, taught 4-H fine art workshops, put my own pottery and sculptures in art shows and sales, taught wine and canvas classes, cookies and canvas classes, paint and pints classes, and much more over the years!

I love to help my students learn and grow in their artistic abilities by teaching techniques and giving them experience with different media. It is so much fun to watch students create something that is personally meaningful to them!

I have been a leader from a young age starting in 4-H and continuing into adulthood. Teaching elementary art for 10+ years hasn't hurt either!

I have a BAE from Herron School of Art and Design. I have been an artist and crafter most of my life. I have 13 years of art education experience and currently teach at the high school level. I am a practicing ceramicist and designer who creates functional and sculptural pottery as well as digital design for print and production.

About the lesson

Process for one on one lessons:

Call or email to discuss needs and outcomes for the student, possibly including previous work of the student to determine their current skill level. Develop a plan to meet needs and achieve the outcomes desired. Share with student's family and come to an agreement before beginning lessons.

Process for group lessons and camps:

I design camp/session/series curriculum based on interests of past students, current trends, requests, or personal interests. Minimum student level for class must be met 1 week before start date.

Primarily elementary students as that is my day job and a lot of my students come to summer camps. I have worked with middle and high school age artists in a variety of settings as well. I have taught adult painting classes too!

Find someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about the media you are interested in learning about and whom you make a connection with personally. It will help you and your instructor to be on the same page with what you want to learn.

I just finished a mixed media art camp where my students learned to design and create sculptures from paper mache and plaster wrap. They had to overcome a variety of challenges to create unique pieces of art. They also learned to tie dye, screenprint, monoprint, acrylic pour, watercolor paint in a monochromatic color scheme, and sculpt with oven bake clay.

Personally, I recently finished a ceramic sculpture inspired by Calypso the sea nymph from Homer's "The Odyssey". This sculpture was my focus for two months and is on display in a coffee shop gallery in Fountain Square in Indianapolis.
