About Alisha

Art has always been a part of my life, but I never really believed I was a "True Artist" because I didn't think I could put my emotions into my work. It wasn't till my first solo artshow, that I realized that there is a little me in everything I do. I also realized how I made up some weird rule about what a true artist does.

I started teaching pottery and painting not long after that, and one of the things I noticed is thoses little whispers of doubt, or negativity can keep us captive for years in a prision of our own making. Art is one of the things that help me break out of that prison, and I believe it has the same power for everyone. I want to share that with the world.

I teach pottery, painting, drawing, and jewelry making. I am a Kansas City based artist that offers mobile art classes. I have a portable pottery wheel that I take with me.

With pottery I enjoy taking a lump of a muddy mess and turning it into something beautiful that I can use every day.

With painting and drawing I enjoy watching something I have in my mind get translated to on the canvas or paper.

With teaching, I love watching someone's confidence as an artist grow, and I enjoy being a part of their artistic journey.

I started just helping out while my art mentor/ boss was teaching, but before long, the teaching bug bit me and I started leading my own lessons.

I have been a professional artist since 2010, and I have been teaching since 2014. Everything I learned about teaching, I learned on the job at the studio where I have worked at since 2013.

About the lesson

Each lesson is taylored to the individual, because everyone learns differently. This is also important since I teach different things. There are two options of locations for the different art lessons: 1. Students can come to the studio where I work partime. OR 2. I offer in home lessons as well. If option 2 is chosen, there is a inital interview before the lesson to assure both parties are on the same page... Safety first.

I have worked with students of all ages, from 4 years old to people in a nursing home.

1. Don't let doubts or lack of art knowledge stop you from pursuing something you have always wanted to do. Trust your instructor, we all start at the same place. Your instructor is a little further along on their artist journey.

2. Pick someone you feel comfortable with. Art journeys are personal journeys, your teacher is just a guide.

3. If you don't feel comfortable with your teacher, don't let that stop you from pursuing art. Just pick another one.

4. Look for someone who can teach at your level.

I am currently working with a summer camp teaching pottery, on a given day I see any where from 100 to 200 kids. It has been the most challenging and rewarding experience I have ever had the privilage to experience. The kids are mostly inner city kids, and they come in with aprehension and doubt about working on a pottery wheel, but leave with a sense of accomplishment. I love it.

Details

All Lessons start out at $25 per hour, with a one time $10 travel fee if the lesson is to be somewhere else besides the studio.

Cost of materials is included, with the choice to get specialty glazes for pottery (basic glazes are provieded at no extra cost).
