About Stephen

I began drawing at the age of 5 and, until 1968, I spent many Saturday mornings taking art lessons at the Dayton Art Institute. After earning a BA in Fine Arts, 1977, I opened up fine art and illustration services. After several years of landscape painting, humor, portrait and caricature art, I added Architectural Illustration to my studio services. Over the years, my desire to "paint large" evolved into the commercial/residential mural arena. As my children grew, I was drafted into their elementary schools to teach about selected masters of art. I found teaching to be rewarding and uplifting. He has given me a gift and what I do with it is my gift to Him. I cannot think of a better way than to help others increase their enjoyment as they improve their artistic skills.

My passion for teaching began when I was a freshman in college. The professor noticed that I had little trouble when going through some of the basic fundamental principles of drawing... ie. perspective drawing, proportion control and et al.

As my children grew and began college, I found myself teaching architectural drawing at the College of Mt. St. Joseph in Cincinnati and lecturing at the University of Kentucky demonstrating illustration techniques and discussing visual design compositions. Aiding in the development of fine art fundamentals is a critical step to guiding students toward complete freedom of expressions.

Began in college when I minored in Literature and Education. Given private lessons and painting demonstrations, throughout my career.

BA in Fine Arts, AA in Commercial Art/Computer Graphics and an MBA in Business Marketing. Established lecturer of Art and Illustration techniques at both the College of Mt. Saint Joseph and University of Kentucky.

About the lesson

Meet and greet is the first step. After a new student is comfortable with me, we begin by going over established skills via portfolio review. Then a plan is developed to accommodate the student's desired direction they wish to take their talent.

As a substitute teacher in the Dayton City School system, I have taught art classes for 4-6 grade. Lectured and demonstrated illustration techniques to college level students. Multiple private lessons for adults. Beginners and intermediate level students dominate my teaching experiences.

My advice is to find an instructor who is willing to find ways to enhance existing skills and demonstrate ways to improve on their talents. Also, review their work and read what they have written.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
My firm belief is that each student should consider how serious they are about their art and what direction they would like to persue. Are they going to make a career out of their talent or will it be considered a hobby, a part-time revenue stream or perhaps to enhance their current job.

Details

Pricing schedule varies as either private or shared lessons may be arranged. Multiple student sessions may be arranged. 2-4 students sessions are designed to accommodate home schooling or adults wishing to learn together. Art supplies are not included.

1 student: $45 per hour

2 students: $35 per hour per student

3 students: $25 per hour per student

4 students: $20 per hour per student
