About Mike
I focus my teaching on the needs and interests of my students. I also consider their level of skill and tailor my teaching toward helping them improve and enjoy the art learning process. I've been drawing and painting over 60 years and I'm experienced with most mediums. I studied the elements and principles of composition, drawing and oil painting in college. I'm basically self taught in watercolor and acrylic painting. I've been teaching privately for the past 3 years. Please see my art at (concealed information) My Facebook business page can be found at "Mike King Fine Art Creations" and also on Instagram as "Michael King."
I like seeing my students' faces light up when they grasp a new concept or technique I've taught them. I like watching their efforts to apply the technique and master the new skills they have learned. Plus, I learn as well when I research a new skill that my students can apply. I try to teach by demonstration then I have my students apply what they've seen. I believe that showing my students the how and why of the skill is crucial to them: in doing we learn.
I got started teaching friends for free and one of them suggested that I should teach privately and make money for it. I got started with another online site 3 years ago and I've been teaching nearly every week since.
I've been drawing and painting for over 60 years. I studied drawing and oil painting at Allegany College, Cumberland, Md. I'm self taught in watercolors and acrylics. I have been in art galleries in Tampa, Sarasota and St. Petersburg, Fl. I take seminars with more experienced artists to hone my skills and I'm a student of all genres of art, technique and history. I've been teaching privately for the past 3 years.

I find out what they're interested in learning and ask them to email photos of their work so I can gauge their skills. Next, I ask them what mediums they want to start with and I send them a list of supplies to buy and where. I will help them to draw or paint an image of their choice or I'll pick one for them to work on. I teach them in the medium of their choice.
I teach students as young as 5 and as old as 80. The ages of my students doesn't matter to me as long as they want to learn, are teachable, and they enjoy their classes.
I advise persons that are looking for a teacher to find one that teaches the skills they want to learn. I also tell them to read any reviews the teacher has gotten and to ask to see samples of the teacher's work, look at the teacher's website, how long they've been teaching and what qualifies them as a teacher. When they or their parents are paying to be taught the student should find these things out first.
Ive been teaching a very talented 7 year old girl for the past two years. She has a younger sister that hadn't shown much interest until recently. She started sitting in and watching us draw and paint so I encouraged her to join us. She likes to imitate her big sister which helps. She is totally involved in painting now and her mother said she has never spent an hour or more focused on anything until now. She usually gives me a big hug when I leave.

Mike was a great teacher! I had never painted before so he was working with some real raw material. He was very patient. We started with acrylics after he taught me the basics about values & arrangement. I really wanted to do water colors eventually. It was hard but soon after I started the lessons I was painting watercolors. Didn’t think I had an ounce of talent but he brought out the best I had. I would highly recommend him.
Jackie CMike is a highly skilled and versatile artist. He possesses a knowledge of different mediums and techniques, and can fashion highly emotive content in watercolor, acrylic, or oil. But in addition to his ability, he is personable and fosters the creative impulse of his students regardless of age or skill level. He is a consummate professional who interacts with his students in a profound artistic manner.
i enjoyed my lessons with Mike King very, very much. he is extremely knowledgeable about techniques in several areas, such as, acrylics, sketching, watercolors, etc.
and references works and techniques of famous artists.
mike is very patient. i studied with mike for about 5 months but unfortunately moved out of town so i was not able to continue lessons. i am an adult student. as a plus i found my lessons to be very therapeutic. thank you, Mike.Hes an EXPERIENCED , EXCELLENT ARTIST who knows what hes talking about. Plus he knows how to teach it !! Highest recommendation !
I've had multiple training classes with Mr. King. He has many years experience painting commissions and teaching how to paint. This becomes very apparent as he explains and demonstrates not only technique but history of artists and styles. We worked mostly with acrylics at first. He encouraged me to start with abstract art because it was easier to get used to the tools and blending of color without the pressure of reproducing a specific subject. I've had instruction from him on and off over a few years which eventually led to his encouraging me to enter a contest. Which was a great new experience. A person would expect any class to be educational. But not all classes are calming and almost therapeutic. This was an unexpected part the experience which I'm sure came from time spent while painting but also Mike's relaxed training style. I enjoy working with acrylics but Mike has now introduced water color which I am enjoying more than expected. Another new experience. Our last watercolor subject was a waterfront landscape. Mike makes learning to paint enjoyable. Learning new things is good. If it turns out that painting is something new you're thinking about, Mike King will help you do it.
He has passion for art. He's patient. He taught me a new way to look at art. I highly recommend Mike.
