About Kate

I have been teaching art privately for 25 years, working with children and adults of all ages. My degree was in Art History, from Wheaton College in MA, and afterward I went on to study Fine Art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I offer one on one or group lessons in fine art, including acrylic and oil painting, drawing, watercolor and pastel. I give a lot of attention to my students, and work with them to bring out the best of their ability. I am very patient with them, and try to understand any difficulty they are having and help them to work through it.

Art is my passion. I know this sounds "cliche" but it's true, I live for art! I understand the need of one to create art, and work with my students to help them nurture this need.

I started teaching out of my home studio in 2003, as I wanted a career that would allow me to stay at home with my children, and also do something that I am passionate about.

I have a degree in Art History from Wheaton College in Massachusetts, and the equivalent of a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. I have also been teaching students in my home or theirs, or in my studio for 25 years, in New Jersey, Missouri and now, in Vermont. In addition to teaching students fine art, I have a Paint and Sip business, and have had over 3,000 students in the past 4 years. Most of the students are adults, but I have taught many children, and done many art parties with kids.

About the lesson

I like to see what they have done, if anything, in art, and depending on their level, work up a step by step plan for them. If they have never done any artwork, we start at the beginning, with very basic elements of drawing, shading, contour, etc. If it's painting, we also start with drawing, but then work on basics of color mixing. I like to start beginners with one color "value" paintings, of a simple subject, to get them introduced to the values of light and dark.

For the student who is beyond beginner, I assess what skills they have and go from there with a lesson plan.

I have taught all ages from the age of approximately 5yrs old, girls and boys, in private and group lessons. I also taught home schooled children for several years. I have also worked with students who were preparing portfolios for art schools.

In addition to teaching on my own, I also was an after school art teacher for programs that I designed for private and public schools, while I lived in New Jersey. I spent a year as a volunteer teacher in kindergarten, teaching once a month in a special program, as well.

I would encourage them to give me a call and discuss what they are looking for as far as lessons, and where they hope to go with the instruction. Are they doing this for fun, to learn a new skill, do they hope to be an artist someday, are they working on a special project for school, etc.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think that the first question should be what area of art they want to study, be it drawing, oil painting, acrylic painting, pastel, or watercolor. What do they hope to accomplish with their skills? Do they want to take art lessons as an extra-curriclular activity, explore it as a means of relaxation, or develop their skills to a professional level.
