About Kristi

I offer student-directed art classes and encourage each student to pursue their own interest and purges at their own pace. In addition to private classes, small classes of 8 or fewer ensure plenty of personal attention. I have been teaching privately consistently since 1996 both children and adults. Some of my students have been with me for 10 plus years.

I absolutely love color and line and the creation of the illusion of three dimensional space on paper. Sharing the joy of capturing moments of quiet beauty and peacefulness makes me very happy. Creating art is a wonderful form of stress management and self expression. I greatly enjoy helping others see their skills expand and be able to bring to life their visions.

I began teaching because multiple people approached me and requested that I teach a class in 1996 at an arts festival where I was exhibiting. I began with those 5 students and have taught consistently ever since.

I have been a professional artist for 30 years and have taught art classes privately for 20 yards to children and adults. My work is in private and public collections across the U.S. and abroad. I continue to attend workshops to broaden my skills and sms offered workshops and multi-week instruction in schools and privately both locally and internationally.

About the lesson

I like to meet a new student informally for a chat about their interests and for them to see my work to see if we're a good match. I prefer to have them show me previous work they've done so I get a sense of where they are, then in class I do individual demonstrations and instruction based on their level and project. Each student is encouraged to progress at their own pace and find their own style and preferred way of working.

I have worked with all levels of students from complete beginners to seasoned hobbyists from ages 3 to 85. I like to tell people if they can follow directions, I can teach them how to paint.

Find a teacher whose work you admire, but who isn't intent on making you create art exactly like they do. A teacher who will give you choices on how to approach every problem and encourage you to develop and trust your own point of view is one you can learn from for a long time. We all need reassurance that our voice matters.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is important to ask who comes up with the subject matter for the projects. You should decide if you'd like the teacher to do that or if you'll choose what most interests you. (I require students to choose their own projects) A good question is also how does the teacher show you how to do something? Do they draw or paint right on your work, use a transparency or a separate surface? (I show you on separate surfaces or transparencies as appropriate, never on your work!) Also, dies everyone in a group clad work on the same project or are they all different? ( in my group clad everyone works on their own project, at their own pace, even in different mediums)

Details

Yes, there is an hourly rate for private lessons of $40/hour with materials, $35 without. Group classes are 2 hours for $20 with materials , $16 without. I offer classes weekly, or every other week for private classes, weekly for group and students are welcome to drop in. Private classes once scheduled are expected to be paid on a monthly basis.
