About Marissa

Marissa's mission for The Art of Ecology is to "Build Visual Connections between people and nature through art in order to create a deeper understanding and respect for the natural world - therefore increasing the desire to protect and conserve its resources."

Marissa is an Environmental & Conservation educator who focuses on blending the arts with science to deepen understanding and help build stronger connections between her students and the natural world. She us an international speaker, Certified National Geographic educator, and is also a mentor for that certificate program. She holds a B.S. in Conservation & Wildlife Management with a focus in digital media & art.

Before studying environmental science and wildlife conservation, she was on the Veterinary Medicine track with Pre-Professional Biology majors. During that time, her passions were Comparative Anatomy, Genetics, Marine Biology, Microbiology, and Practical Botany.

Now, she has roughly 10 years of informal education experience, is an award-winning photographer, has spoken overseas, and offers many classes and workshops that focus on the blend of the arts and sciences.

Originally studying Veterinary Medicine in the Pre-Professional Biology Department, I decided to switch lanes after taking an "Animals in the Public Eye" class that taught the basics of informal wildlife education.

I switched to studying Wildlife Conservation in the Animal Biotechnology & Conservation department and focused on blending my passion for animal and environemntal science with my passion for art. My first degree-related job out of college was working with an environmental education organization as their graphic designer and event photographer, then continued my informal education training by becoming a teacher naturalist. After that, I have continued on the education path and have since become a certified educator with National Geographic.

I provide public educational programming for all ages, focusing on blending the arts and sciences and now have roughly 10 years of informal teaching experience!

About the lesson

During our first session, I will ask questions to set a base level of knowledge and discover each student's unique learning style. The first tutoring session is typically shorter than usual and gives me a better understanding of how best to help the student and their learning needs.

Sessions can be set up during weekdays and can work virtually or in person.

As an informal educator, I work with students of all ages, races, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Also, expect the teacher to not only help you better understand the subject, but also to help relate the subject to real-world experiences and empower you!

I had the amazing opportunity to speak at a Global Leadership Summit in Dubai, UAE to a cross-cultural group. Not only was I a speaker, presenting "Telling a Visual Story Through Photography"during that event, but I also was the event photographer. I was able to work with conference participants from 5 different countries and lead photography workshops.
