About Alexis

I studied fine arts at The California College of Art and Craft with an emphasis in arts education, drawing, and sculpture. I first started teaching art in 2002 in a community ceramics studio. My classes are very skill-oriented. You will develop a diverse variety of techniques and mediums have the skillset to create complete and compelling drawings and paintings. Master shading, color, anatomy, portraits, still life, and more! Concept and creativity are encouraged.

All ages are welcome!

I love connecting with people and helping them bring their vision into fruition. Personally, my work is a hybridization of classical techniques in a contemporary style. I love color and tend to be a bit experimental with it. I usually paint people, wildlife, and plants. My favorite mediums are gouache, watercolor, pen, and prismacolor pencil. I am also skilled with calligraphy, chalk pastels, oil pastels, charcoal, and acrylic paint.

I started teaching children's pottery nearly 20 years ago in a local ceramics studio. I don't currently have a viable setup for pottery, unfortunately.

I graduated with a BFA in Art Education and Sculpture from California College of the Arts in 2008. I also studied painting/drawing and printmaking while I was there.

About the lesson

I customise each curriculum to each students goals, interests, and ability level. With beginner students, I prefer to start with drawing so we can work with values, compositions, and proportions before moving into color and painting techniques. Advanced students can begin with acrylic or watercolor. I always send a supply list prior to the first lesson, as well.

Typically in a first lesson, we cover the uses of each drawing tool and then I give a demonstration of the assignment, and the student can draw along with me for the duration of the lesson. I offer coaching and support throughout the lesson. For local students (I live in Lacey, WA), we can meet either in my home or in a local coffee shop. The majority of my students, however, are futher away. I use a webcam to give demonstrations and provide links to drawing references and examples. It's a bit like Bob Ross.

All ages and diverse backgrounds. A lot of my beginner students come to class staring inhibitions and fears in the face. My favorite is when they're able to push past it all and shine. :)

Look for someone who's supportive. Not every drawing is a masterpiece, but every bump in the road is a stone in the path towards mastery.

I had a lovely portrait event earlier this week. My student was initially concerned that portraits were one of the hardest things you can draw. We did two drawings, and she made enormous improvements in only a two hour lesson. I was so impressed!

Do you have a specific goal?

What subject matter are you interested in? Still life, landscape, portraiture, wildlife, character drawing, etc.

What skill level would you consider yourself? Have you taken an art class before?

Be aware that drawing and painting are time consuming processes, and it's better to take longer lessons if possible.
