About Susan

The purpose of art is to enable unique expression that identifies each individual in his or her own signature. Each person is capable of seeing clearly, believing in oneself, and finding a way to show the world that moving forward is a positive experience. Learning to draw can do that.

I am an award'winning college professor having taught drawing, painting, art history and art appreciation successfully in Colorado and CA since 1980. Now I teach at Otis College of Art and Design where my student reviews are among the highest in the college. I love teaching and I love art.

Watching the excitement on a students’ face when they understand that their artwork has meaning, that it represents part of themselves. And watching a student’s visual development as the visual world becomes clearer and clearer in their drawings and paintings. You can see my delight and enjoyment in creating art on my website,

I started as an Elementary Classroom teacher in Brooklyn New York and loved working with children. Then I began to teach all art to all ages—especially adults who wanted to challenge themselves to learn something new and expressive.

I have a Ph.D in Art Education and have studied Art History here and in Italy and France along with drawing and painting for many years. I am an award-winning professional, and have been teaching art to all ages, for almost 40 years.

About the lesson

Meet to assess their main interests, goals, and skill levels. Tailor lessons around those interests. Love working outside, on sites around the city. Being on site is stimulating and inspiring.

I have worked with all ages of people—from 4 to 94.

Find a person with love for art, both the process and the product. A great teacher must first know their student so make sure she is truly interested in you—wanting to know who you are. And finally, find a way to recognize that this teacher has passion for what they can bring, and compassion and appreciation for what you bring.

When visiting a museum with a young woman, we discussed light as a medium of expression. Actual light. She didn’t understand at first—she just saw blankness. Then, as we toured, and carefully looked she began to see subtle differences—shadows, changes of color, and exciting edges of shape. It was exciting to watch, and she became a complete and devoted fan of the artist, and of me.
