About Donya

I always loved to create but spent 25 years in a corporate job that didn't allow much extra time. I moved to Portland 8 years ago and began to paint, which led to lettering, calligraphy and chalk, then cement sculpture. I currently teach a monthy Sip & Paint class and the feedback from my students has been very positive. The class fills up weeks in advance and I added another class to accommodate everyone interested. I have found that I really enjoying teaching but especially seeing how everyone paints in their own unique style and each one is different from the others. This always amazes me and makes me happy. My goal is for students to leave my class with a piece of art that they are proud of.

When I am painting or creating my mind is working on the design and the colors and spontaneous additions. I completely forget about anything else, including time. It is the most peaceful and satisfying work that I have ever done. It is nice when others give me compliments about my work but I don't create for the accolades, I create because I need to, if that makes sense.

I started teaching a Sip & Paint class with up to 10 students at a time. I love teaching, to share a shortcut or method with students that makes a difference in the way they work. With 10 students I am always pleased and amazed at the art they produce and how each one is always unique even with the same subject matter.

Although I have taken some classes about color theory, acrylic painting and printmaking, I am primarily self-taught.

About the lesson

After a conversation about what direction, skill livel and medium the student is interested in we dive right in. I have all materials to get started. I want the student to leave the session with a piece of art that they are proud of.

A wide variety of students, most with little or no art experience.

Have some ideas of exactly what you want to learn. Its helpful for a teacher to have a place to start. Don't worry about your experience level, that is not important.

My first class I had a student who just wanted to paint a childlike snowman because she felt she had no talent to paint the landscape we were working on. She started to paint and something clicked. She produced the best painting of all the students and became excited about her talent. Subsequently she bought canvases and paints and now paints regularly at home.
