About Michael

I love to teach art. Art is my life! With over 30 years of teaching experience and hundreds of happy former and current students, I feel very comfortable meeting new and eager students who expect a well founded and professional instructor. I will give you my full attention and set you on the right path for your creative journey.

I thoroughly enjoy witnessing students as they progress in their artistic endeavors. It means a lot to me that they succeed. And I absolutely positively enjoy seeing that progress and witnessing those successes first hand.

I began teaching as a graduate assistant while earning my MFA in painting and printmaking at the University of South Florida. I then was awarded a grant from the national endowment of the arts as an artist in education for Volusia county Florida.

I have a bachelor's degree in fine art from the University of Notre Dame where I was awarded with the highest honor for a graduating art student, the Jacques gold medal of fine arts. I have a master's degree in painting and printmaking from the University of South Florida where I graduated with honors. I have been teaching art since 19 81 at the University of South Florida, the greater Reston arts center, the Corcoran School of art and design, the McClean project for the arts, and Fairfax county. I was a full professor of art and program coordinator at Montgomery College, MD.

About the lesson

I start with a brief history of painting. I then teach the basic principles of design. I discuss the various paint media. I discuss types of brushes to use for various effects. I teach them about stretching a canvas and preparing the surface for painting. I then move on to describe the various approaches To painting. As the class moves along, I will demonstrate the traditional way to start a painting. I will set up a simple still life, light it, find the best point of view, while explaining composition and the importance of creating stability and unity within the composition. I will then paint in front of them methodically in a traditional method. And as I go along I will have the students begin their paintings. I will assist them individually when finding the right point of view and where to begin their painting. This will continue through the various stages of the painting until we reach the end of the class. I will then have the students briefly speak about their work and I will follow with my comments. I will suggest assignments for them to be done before the next meeting.

As an art teacher I have worked with all ages from 7 year olds to 70 year olds. I have worked with disabled veterans, special ed students, deaf students, students with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities. I have worked with gifted and underprivileged students. I have found joy working with each and every one of these individuals.

I would ask to see some of the potential instructor's work. I would ask the person who his or her favorite artists are. I would ask for his or her teaching philosophy. I would also ask what do you expect from me the student.

I just met up with a former student last Wednesday and had lunch and talked and did show and tell for about 3 hours. It was very nice to see a former student still interested in what I was up to in my art. I showed him over 100 works that day!
