About Susan

I've been teaching art lessons for over 10 years and I've also hosted crafting sessions for roughly 18 years. I earned my B.F.A. from Creighton University where I focused in painting but I honestly learned infinitly more during the many years since college, working as a free-lance artist and muralist in Chicago. I'm not ridgid in my lesson plans, I like to base my lessons on the individual as well as the project. I offer all types of projects to fit every type of student; ranging from detailed, long-term projects that may take 6 months to complete, to quicker projects that may only take one to two lessons to finish. My classes are truly tailored to each student.

Although my students usally come to me, I do travel to events where a group of people will be participating. This includes wine and paint nights, birthday parties, etc.

I love being able to teach out of my home in a casual atmosphere where hot tea and lattes are always in full supply. Getting to know my students is real a perk of the job! I really enjoy helping students work through a challenge and seeing their confidence grow.

I've always been involved in arts and crafts and over the years, I have been fortunate enough to have people seek me out for lessons.

I've earned a B.F.A. with a focus in painting from Creighton University. I've also worked as a free-lance artist in the Chicago area for nearly 10 years. I've completed many murals, public art projects, installations, etc. Every new project teaches me something new and that knowledge makes me a better teacher.

About the lesson

Before meeting with a new student, I like to figure out the type of project we will be working on. Some of my students like to work on holiday craft projects while others perfer to work on detailed paintings. Once we determine the project, I provide a list of materials that are needed (I provide certain materials and ask the student to bring some items as well). I do my best to help a student meet deadlines (such as a holiday projects, gifts, etc.). Based on the student's skill level, I come up with a lesson plan and approximate time frame. Then we get to work!

I've worked with all types of students but most of my students are between the ages of 2 and 18. I've worked with a lot of parents and toddlers on keepsake projects and that has become pretty popular. Most of my students are beginners but I've also had the pleasure of working with several intermeddiate students as well as a few professionsals looking for a different point of view.

Ask a lot of questions and don't be afraid to challenge yourself. You may think a project seems too difficult but a good teacher will be able to get you to your goal.

I had an absolute blast teaching a group of highschoolers how to paint during a birthday party. Everyone was so lovely and enthusiastic. We enjoyed cake while painting away for roughly 3 hours. They all did such an amazing job.
