About Katherine
KEF Percussion, run by Katherine Fortunato, strives to create the best possible product across all areas. From teaching percussion lessons to performing, KEF Percussion works to ensure success.
My name is Katherine Fortunato, and I am the owner of KEF Percussion. I study at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, and I care about quality in the product I produce. Though I love to perform, I have a passion for teaching and wish to change the lives of young musicians. Lesson plans are developed depending on the ability of the student; however, students will learn techniques in all areas of percussion. From snare drum to timpani to two/four mallet percussion, students will work on etudes and repertoire to build on basic techniques so that they can develop their musicianship and grow as people and percussionists.
I love music because it pushes a person out of their comfort zone. I believe that growth cannot take place inside one's comfort zone, and I encourage students to learn to love the process.
Collaboration is also an integral part of music making. Whether I am working with a colleague or a student, I love to interact with others through music.
I have a passion for percussion, but in my years of performing I found that I also have a love for teaching. I love to share new discoveries with students, and I enjoy guiding young musicians in the best possible way to set them up for their own success. Whether a student is preparing for an audition or trying to learn a new four-mallet marimba solo, I have a passion for helping students grow in music and as people.
I am currently studying Classical Percussion Performance at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. In Miami, I am fortunate enough to work with world-class musicians at top-of-the-line facilities. I've been studying percussion for over 10 years and have gathered experience from both teaching and performing that I'm eager to share with students!

I try my best to adapt my teaching style to each students' needs. The first lesson I teach with a student is free, and in this lesson I'll consider variables such as the student's experience and personal goals to create a lesson plan to work with in future lessons. Though lessons with me are structured educationally, I try to incorporate fun into everything I work on with students. After all, that's one of the reasons we study music!
I have worked with students of all experience levels. Whether a student comes to me with little/no experience in percussion or with a strong foundation, I enjoy working with anyone who is excited about learning music!
Find a teacher who is passionate about what they do. Though it is important to find a teacher who is advanced in their field, it is just as important to find a teacher who loves teaching. Teachers must help their students grow. Find a teacher who will help you reach your goals in a fun, energetic way!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should think about their goals before talking to teachers about their needs. A teacher can only do so much without prior knowledge of the student. If a student comes to a teacher with clear goals such as, "I'd like to improve my snare drumming," or "I'd like to play _____ on marimba," the teacher will have a much easier time helping the student.
