About Jameson

I am a college junior at the University of Michigan studying Public Health Sciences and Spanish, and I love to tutor other students who may need help in areas that I feel confident in. I have proficiency across all basic subjects such as English (reading, essay writing/editing, grammar, etc.), Sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, etc.), Spanish (reading, writing, speaking, grammar), and Math (algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics, etc.). I also am equipped to aid in college essay writing as well as standardized tests (ACT/SAT) and general college applications.

It is one of the greatest feelings in the world for me when I am able to help something really click for a student. A concept that they've previously been lost on or frustrated with finally making sense is so gratifying as a student and as a tutor. Education is so important to me, and I have been lucky enough to have great teachers and educationin my life, so I want to spread the good fortune.

In high school, I started tutoring for volunteer hours through my school's National Honors Society. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to join an organization through the University of Michigan that focuses on tutoring and mentoring of Latin American students and their families.

I have tutored kids for around 6 years throughout high school and college. I have also been in mentoring programs for peers and younger students, so I feel I've gained some meaningful and useful skills in the way of teaching other students. However, I think my best training has come from simply being a student who has needed extra help in my academic career.

About the lesson

First, I like to get a sense of why they're in need of some extra help. Is the subject confusing, are you behind, or are you maybe desiring some extra practice in order to excel? I also like to understand how the student best learns in order to craft tutoring sessions around that. If you have any methods or accommodations that help you learn, that's great! Open dialogue is super important.

All kinds! Students with special needs, students who just need some extra help, and students who are even more advanced than what they're learning in school.

I would say that you should shop around and find someone who you connect with and feel comfortable with. You don't have to choose the first, second, or third tutor you meet with. Your education is not something to gamble on or take less than you deserve on.

I had a really great Mother's Day with my mom, aunt, and grandma. We had a nice dinner and celebrated together, then we video called my brother and cousins to play virtual family game night.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think the student should really examine what has worked for them in the past in terms of learning and also what hasn't worked. It is difficult to have a meaningful, beneficial tutoring experience if both the tutor and the student do not have an understanding of how the student learns best. Ask yourself things like "am I a visual learner?" "Do I learn best with a lot of independent practice problems and tests or with more one-on-one instruction and guidance?"
