About Aoife

Hello! My name is Aoife Trotter and I'm a student at Florida State University studying psychology and literature. English has always been a passion of mine, and I love helping my classmates, siblings, and younger students improve their skills!

In terms of my English education, I have excelled in both AP English courses and have taken several university literature and composition classes, so I am equipped to assist K-12 students of all ages and skill levels. Additionally, I received a 730 on the English section of the SAT and can therefore provide test prep in the reading, writing, and essay sections for your student. In my free time, I write and edit for an online start-up magazine, Spire, so I have experience with proofreading, grammar, and a range of writing styles. My work as a psychology student has also familiarized me with expository writing and reading, research techniques, and technical formatting styles like MLA and APA. Whether it’s learning sight words and basic spelling to perfecting your student’s college essay and test scores, I will enthusiastically work to meet you and your child’s goals!

I believe that learning how to read and write skillfully is an attribute that can open doors to your student not only within the context of succeeding academically, but also outside of the classroom. Reading and writing has taught me how to empathize with others, challenge myself, and communicate effectively to those around me. I love learning English, and I feel very satisfied when I have the priviledge of sharing my passion for language arts with others.

About the lesson

First, I'd like to understand what goals you (and your student) have, and then assess where your student currently is. For example, during test prep tutoring I would ask your student what his or her last score on the SAT was, and then his or her target score. I would also try to assess your student in a more in-depth way in order to gauge what specific problems we can work on during tutoring. Depending on your child's age and goals, this could mean reviewing one of their essays or listening to them read aloud. One I have identified some of these issues, practicing those tricky spots through essay writing, reading and subsequent discussion, worksheets, etc. can help strengthen those skills in a targeted way that suits your child's needs, but also incorporates what they enjoy doing.
