Hello!

My name is Raina, and I am currently a sophomore at the University of California, Berkeley. I have been tutoring students of all ages for three years now.

My strengths lie in communication, both written and oral. Thus, I am an especially passionate and effective tutor for helping students better their writing skills, both for AP classes and general improvement, as well as their public speaking. I have competed in many public speaking clubs in the past and understand how difficult it can be. I love collaborating with students to not only teach them speaking techniques, but also to increase their confidence and interpersonal skills! The full range of subjects I teach is: writing (general), public speaking, English (general), AP English courses, AP History courses, college essay guidance, and college counseling.

Some examples of students I have taught in the past are:

- An ESL student in ninth grade who needed help with adapting to high school English classes.

- An eighth student with stage fright, whom I coached in both speech and debate.

- Multiple high school students in AP US History coursework.

- Multiple high school students in need of college counseling and college essay editing.

I am qualified to teach several AP courses for high school students. I received a 5 on exams such as AP English Language and Composition, AP US History, AP World History, and AP Macroeconomics. I also have a passion for public speaking and consider it a genuine joy to help others better their speaking skills. In high school, I competed extensively in Mock Trial and Model United Nations. My team won the Mock Trial county championship, and I was personally awarded the "Outstanding Attorney" distinction at both the county and statewide Mock Trial competitions. Last but not least, as an incoming sophomore at Berkeley, I completed the college application process. I am all too aware of the anxieties and confusion attached to this stage of a high school student's life, and I have a recent understanding of what it takes to be a successful applicant. I enjoy editing essays, and I have had past students (some who are now attending Ivy League institutions) gush that they would not have been admitted without my feedback!

About the lesson

When I receive a new student, the first thing I do is set up a free consultation. This meeting is essential because it is my chance to pinpoint what is holding the student back, and what their potential learning style is. I also consider it crucial to first build rapport with the student to create a comfortable teaching environment. Then, I tailor a customized lesson plan specific to the student and their needs based off the consultation, so that I can target the student's unique needs.

I charge $30/hour for tutoring, $40 per long college essay edited (300+ words), and $15 per short college essay edited (under 300 words).
