About Arva

I cannot wait to meet and work with new people. I am genuinely interested in my students as individuals. I work with each to identify and meet learning objectives, whether that is mastering the fifth grade STAAR or achieving an optimum SAT score. I have a wide variety of interests and a world of experiences with teaching - and life in general. I reach out to each young person to get to know his or her interests, strengths, and concerns. As a result of engagement and diligent work, my students have significantly increased scores in their school work and achieved high test scores.

I have taught from the elementary through the graduate level. I specialize in English and literacy skills, history and all social studies, and SAT and GED preparations. Additionally, I am ESL certified. Not only have I had

books published, but I have helped several of my students win awards for their writing. I believe in encouraging each person I teach to develop to his or her highest potential.

Sincerely,

Lee

I tutored as a high school student, and worked with children's choirs and youth groups in my church. It seemed to be a natural progression to go into education. I enjoyed helping other people gain skills and discover the joy of learning. I have expanded my interests and certifications over the years.

I have over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience in English and the language arts, all of the social studies, and ESL. I have studied and used a wide variety of teaching methods.

I would like to have some kind of communication with the student, and if possible a sample of the student's work. I would ask the parents about their expectations and ask for outcome objectives. Above all, I would want to know the student's interests and goals, and then determine a plan.

We will work together during the tutoring session to acquire new skills and  practice established ones. I will assign some work for the student to do and have ready before the next tutoring session. We will review that work, make additions and corrections, and then begin on the new lesson.

I have worked with students of all ages and all levels of abilities and interests. I enjoy working with the student who has been struggling and with the student who wants to be at the top of the class. Most of the young people I tutor are between the ages of ten and eighteen.

Look for someone who enjoys teaching - and learning. Get a teacher who helps you look for and find the answers - not someone who tells you what every answer is supposed to be.

Some of my students and I have been reading WONDER together. In our conversations and in their personal writing, these young people have shown profound understanding regarding the characters' emotions and actions. This has touched me.

One of my students randomly asked me to help her write some poetry together. She wrote some of the most beautiful, profound Haiku I have ever read, and she is only in the sixth grade.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Know what your objective is. Know your goals. Be honest about your likes and dislikes about school.. Be able to explain how you best learn.
