About Madison

I have a bachelors degree in English and a minor in Education. I have been tutoring since I was a teenager and I have been a subsitute teacher for a year. I am PPR certified and I am in the process of completing my ELAR 7-12 certification so that I can student teach and complete my minor. While my area of focus is grade 7-12, I have experince in teaching and working with children of all ages and academic levels.

I went to college for teaching. I knew I wanted to be a teacher so I focused my studies around that.

I have a bachelors degree in English and I am almost done with my minor in Education. All I have left to do is student teach. All of this was completed at Texas Woman's University. I am PPR state certified and I am in the process of completing my ELAR 7-12 state certification.

About the lesson

The very first step is do a quick assessment to see where the student is at and what needs help. The first session is also where I like to get to know the stduent. Not just acadmeiclly but personally as well. What kind of things do they like? What is their favorite way to learn? What do they not like? What do they think is hard for them? What do they think that they are really good at? These questions are all used to help me to create a specialized learning plan and goals for them.

My focus of teaching is ELAR grades 7-12, but I have experience with children of all ages and academic levels. I also have five years experince working with daycare children ranging in ages from 0-4.

Find someone who is flexible. There is no one right way to teach or learn something. Look for a teacher who understands this and is willing to do trial and error when it comes to the learning process.

One of my fondest memories is during a long-term subbing position for an eighth grade history class. One of their assignments was a short essay over the constitutional amendments. A handfull of students asked for help during the writing process, so I ended up doing a whole class mini-lesson on how to write a persuasive essay. We went over the different componets and how to look and cite evidence. A few students had more trouble than others and I spent extra time with them. They even came in to tutorials before school so that they could get the help that they needed. Once they got their grades back, many of the students who had extra difficulty with the essay come running up to my desk showing me their grades. They had all recieved passing grades and they were very happy with it. A few said that they had never recived a grade that high on a writing assignment before.

Seeing how happy the students were and how proud they were of themselves is one of the best memories that I have. It made me feel that I really was in the right profession.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what is working for you. Are there certian learning techniques that you like or that really help you to understand the content? Now, what is not working for you? Once you figure out what really works for you and what does not, think about why.

Thinking about and understanding how you learn is going to help you succced academically. Having this information to give to your teacher will also help them to know exactly how to help you.

Pricing usually depends on what all the student needs help with and/or how many students. Base price is $15/hour. I am somewhat felxible on pricing, but I will not go lower than my base price of $15.
