About Rachel
I am a college student studying psychology and education. For the last three years I have worked with students ages 6-18 on writing and reading comprehension. I am certified in Orton Gillingham methods of literacy which makes my sessions fun and hands-on. I got my certification during my time working for Winston Salem Reads, a nonprofit that believes that literacy is the most important skill we can teach children and adults. After working for WSR, I moved to Asheville where I taught in the literacy office for 1st-5th graders. I worked on story telling, grammar, handwriting, reading comprehension, and writing skills. I now mentor underclassmen in college and high school seniors writing essays for grad schools and colleges. I love to read and helping people put their ideas into words is the thing I am most passionate about.
I worked in an elementary school for two years while in college. I now mentor ungergraduates as well as high school students in applying for college and beyond. I am certified in the Orton Gillingham model of literacy which was first intended for students with Dyslexia, but has now been shown to help all types of literacy learners.

I believe that success comes from first meeting someone where they are before collaborating on where you will go together. I understand that people learn differently. Learning differences are welcomed with open arms. I know that they way I think through an idea might be totally against the way my student thinks. I try my best to understand their process, so that we can communicate most efficiently.

I typically charge $25/hr, though I am passionate about access to quality education. Because of this, if this rate does not fall in a price range you are comfortable with, I am open to discussing sliding scale options.
