About Karissa
Reading and writing are two of my passions! Whether it's working with someone who is new to the English language as I have done in my previous TESOL experience, or working with someone who just wants to tweak their skills I love to learn and to grow with my students! I went to a college that focused on creating clear and concise writers with advanced reading comprehension skills. I am well read in several genres on English literature as well as philosophy. I have taught various grade levels while substitute teaching in long term positions and my goal is to make reading fun! My most recent 4th grade class I taught during a three month maternity leave would testify! I am bi-lingual in Spanish and English and love to translate and use circumlocution to aid in comprehension for my ESL students. I have worked extensively with Adult ESL students abroad in Costa Rica tutoring them in the English language as well as young adults in their essay writing as they moved on to college. Watching my students grow and adapting to each students unique learning needs is what excites me most about tutoring and I hope I have the opportunity to grow with you and your student!
I got started teaching by recieving my TESOL certificate and teaching English learners in Costa Rica. I haven't stopped looking for teaching opportunities since! I love teaching because it's a great way to keep learning!
I have a Bachelors of the Arts in International studies. I double majored in Dance and Anthropology with a minor in literature. I also have a TESOL certificate and a background of working with ESL students. I am an experienced substitute teacher and love working with students of all agaes and levels.

When I am working with a new student my goal is to get to know them first! Depending on age and skill level we may play ice breaker games, question games, or just have a conversation about needs and interests. Each student is unique and it is my job to get to know them to better understand how I can provide aid based on their learning style and meet them energetically.
I have worked with all age levels and skill levels from 5 year old Spanish speakers learning English to 85 year olds perfecting English skills. I have worked extensively in the United States with all grade levels, but most deeply with Elementary and High school students in all general subject areas.
Look for a teacher that puts your needs first! You are unique and have your own learning style. Finding a teacher who adapts to your learning style is key in excelling in a subject.
While teaching a 30 student fourth grade class here in Chicago I had a student who refused to do is his work. He would turn in blank google documents and lie about work completion. I found out after a long discussion with his mother that he was feeling distracted participating in at home learning and had a hard time understanding the material because English was his second language and not the language they speak at home. He was diagnosed with ADHD and being outside of the classroom and focused on a screen all day was a difficult experience for him I started translating all of his documents for him, explaining each assignment in detail in Spanish and English for him, and checking in on him more frequently. We took frequent brain breaks and I put him in more leadership positions during class when he understood the material in order to help him focus on the task at hand by making him feel like he was in charge of it. By the end of a month doing this, he was one of my students completing every assignment and doing so skillfully and with care! He just needed to see that someone else cared about his education.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The main question a student should ask themselve is "What need is not being fulfilled for me in this subject?" It could be that you don't enjoy the subject for a variety of reasons, or maybe you just want to improve on a specific skill. Think about why you need the tutoring and what you hope to get out of it!

I have worked mostly on a sliding scale pricing system based on what my students can afford because much of my work has been done abroad with lower income families. Here in the states I have charged $17.00-$25.00 an hour based on frequency of tutoring sessions, and distance travelled to provide tutoring.
