About Sage

I am a rising Junior at Amherst College double-majoring in English and American Studies with a concentration Native American Studies. I am also pursuing a PhD through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellowship with the hope of becoming a professor and providing support and mentorship to FLI students and students of color as they navigate academia. In addition to my academic endeavors I am also a member of the Native and Indigenous Students Association, the Amherst College softball team, the AC Sabrinas, and the leadership training program Amherst LEADS.

While becoming better at English may be the immediate goal, I hope to foster a mentor-mentee relationship with the students I tutor. In addition to helping students with their English skills, I hope to serve as a contact point for questions about the college application process and the college experience.

Students can expect to not only meet high school and/or AP requirements, but to exceed such expectations and begin working toward college-level writing and analytical thinking. I expect that students will share with me their syllabus, and that they will openly communicate with me about upcoming exams/assignments that they wish to work on during our time together. Because I believe strongly in growth mindset philosophies, I will work with students on long-term and short-term goal setting related to their coursework that will ultimately guide the way we go about our work together. I will also share with them reading and writing strategies that I have learned during my time at Amherst that will help move their English skills to the next level.

I truly love seeing students develop into confident and skilled writers and speakers. While my primary goal is to help develop student’s English skills, I hope that my guidance will also help your student learn and utilize their own individual strengths and talents as students. I am lucky enough to study under amazing and dedicated mentors, and my desire is to share what I have learned so that other students' pathway through secondary school and/or higher education may be more engaging, comfortable, and enjoyable.

In addition to working toward obtaining two bachelor's degrees in English and American Studies with a concentration in Native Studies, I was also the winner of the Sacramento County Poetry Out Loud competition and the runner-up in the California Poetry Out Loud comeptition.

About the lesson

Our first session will largely be focused on setting long-term and short-term goals, as well as getting to know students. This will also be a time for student's to share with me their needs, learning style, and current coursework.

It is vital that students find a tutor whose feedback style matches their needs and learning style. Find someone who can guide your writing and work while also letting your individual voice shine through!

I typically charge $30/hour, with the first session being free so that students and parents together can decide whether we are a good fit prior to spending any money.

As a low-income student, I understand the difficulties of accessing affordable educational tools all too well. For this reason, I offer sliding scale and am more than happy to discuss this option on a case-by-case basis.
