About Miles

While completing my Master's degree in French history, I developed a passion for teaching - specifically, helping students feel intellectually empowered. I miss doing that work with learners (confession: most of the time I enjoyed teaching more than I did my own graduate studies!), and would love to have the opportunity to get back into it.

I spent three years in graduate school, and during that time I undertook complex research projects, and wrote papers - a LOT of papers. During that time, I also worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses, so I've also had ample experience helping students understand topics explored in our history classes and helping them write stronger essays. As such, I am prepared to tutor students who need extra help in their history/government courses, or who are seeking help writing essays and/or perfecting their English grammar or expanding their vocabulary.

Finally, I've spent ten years learning and working with the French language, and have also spent time abroad in French-speaking countries (France and Morocco). With that experience, I'm able to provide tutoring in French as well (especially reading and writing).

I have a Bachelor's in history and French and a Master's in French history. In addition, I worked as a teaching assistant while working on my graduate studies.

About the lesson

I usually like to get to a know a little bit about them (their favorite subjects in school, long-term goals, etc.), get a sense of their learning goals (what do they want to get out of their tutoring experience?), and finally, I like to figure out what kind of a learner they are (i.e. visual, abstract, example-based, etc.) and what their greatest strengths as a learner are and where there are opportunities for improvement.

I have worked with a wide variety of learners and thinkers (i.e. mathematical minds, humanities students, and more artistic types) and with socioeconomically diverse undergraduate students.

Worry less about how encyclopaedic the teacher's knowledge may seem on the subject and consider more the teacher's ability to show YOU how to acquire the knowledge and skills on your own terms. For example, if you need to know which US president presided over the Louisiana Purchase, you don't need a tutor for that; Google can easily answer that for you. A good tutor will help you make your own argument for WHY the Louisiana Purchase was important, and what role Thomas Jefferson played in the process.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How best can I make productive use of the time I have with my tutor? What problems am I having with my course(s) that I cannot solve on my own studying time? What issues do I most want to cover with my tutor, and which problems don't need to be prioritized as much?
