About Emma

Hi there,

My company, Valcor Learning, equips students with the tools for success in today's competitive world. From our experience working with a wide range of students, parents, and other educators, we know that a one-size-fits-all approach to education leaves many learners falling through the cracks. That's why our programs are custom-built to fit the needs and learning styles of each one of our students. We offer Academic Support & Enrichment, Test Prep, and College Admissions guidance. At Valcor Learning, we support students with their present goals while helping them develop executive functioning skills and tools for the future!

It's great to meet you! My name is Emma, and I'm looking forward to helping your child reach their best potential. I'm a native French speaker, but I grew up in Portugal and spent my teenage years in Texas. I actually was the 2014 Valedictorian at Houston's Awty International School — I'm excited to be back in town!

I attended the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate and majored in Neuroscience and English. After graduating, I had the opportunity to work for an education company in Boston, gaining experience working with students of all ages and helping them succeed in a wide array of topics. I started as an instructor, became a center manager, and then worked as the Boston Education Director. Supporting instructors, parents, and students deepened my belief that anyone can succeed when given the necessary tools. There's nothing I find more rewarding than helping a student feel confident in their learning abilities.

Outside the classroom you can find me writing letters to those I love, running to explore the city, playing guitar, and always remembering to ask questions!

I started teaching in college! I founded a club called Kinetic that aimed to give students tools to create individual projects. One of my students actually opened a second-hand store that was highly successful.

Andrew and I founded Valcor Learning after working for two for an education company in Boston. We started as instructors and went on to become center directors.

Andrew studied English and History at Boston College. I studied English and Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania.

The onboarding process focuses heavily on getting to know the student and crafting goals for the student's program. We cater our programs to our students, making our sessions as customized as possible and leveraging our students' interests in order to get more buy-in. We also look at how our students work: which tools do they already have in place (do they take notes? Do they have a planner?), what content do they already know, how do they feel about what's being taught. At the end of the day, we see ourselves as mentors and want to make sure our students feel supported and gain confidence in their ability to succeed.

I've worked with all types of students, from 1st grade to 12th grade. I've taught reading to 6 years old and helped students with Calculus. Some of my students had unique learning profiles and I worked with them on finding the right tools for their success.

Find someone you're comfortable with -- a good teacher should make you feel like there are no "silly questions." You and your teacher are a team!
